Chapter 2 – The Daughter Who Chose to Disappear

"Dad..."

The word echoed through the quiet street like thunder.

The old man's breathing stopped.

His trembling fingers reached toward the woman standing only a few feet away.

"No..."

His voice cracked.

"This... this can't be real."

The woman burst into tears.

"It is me."

The old man stumbled backward, gripping the park bench to keep from collapsing.

"You died..."

"They told me you died."

"They buried an empty coffin..."

For twenty-three years he had visited a grave that held no body.

For twenty-three birthdays he had cried alone.

For twenty-three Christmases he had whispered apologies to a daughter he believed he had failed.

Now she was standing right in front of him.

Alive.

Emma looked between them, confused.

"Mommy... why is Grandpa crying?"

The woman knelt beside her daughter, wiping away her own tears.

"Because... sometimes grown-ups make terrible mistakes."

The old man slowly stepped closer.

"If you're alive..."

"Why didn't you come home?"

"Why did you let me believe you were dead?"

His daughter's face turned pale.

"I wanted to."

"I tried."

"But someone made sure I never could."

The words chilled everyone nearby.

The bakery owner stopped arranging cupcakes.

Customers quietly turned to listen.

The woman glanced nervously toward the black SUV.

"We can't stay here."

"They could be watching."

Before the old man could ask who "they" were, a man wearing an expensive gray suit stepped out of the driver's seat.

His cold eyes immediately locked onto the elderly man.

"Emma."

His voice was calm.

"Get in the car."

Emma instinctively hid behind her grandfather.

"I don't want to."

The man forced a smile.

"We're leaving."

The old man stepped between them.

"Who are you?"

The stranger didn't answer.

Instead, he looked directly at the woman.

"I warned you this day would never come."

Fear flashed across her face.

"Please..."

"Don't do this in front of Emma."

The old man felt his heart pounding harder.

"What is happening?"

Finally, the woman whispered the truth.

"This is Richard."

"My husband."

The old man's eyes narrowed.

Richard.

The name sounded strangely familiar.

Then suddenly...

A forgotten memory exploded inside his mind.

Twenty-three years ago...

Just days before his daughter disappeared...

A wealthy businessman named Richard Ashford had offered to buy his small construction company.

When he refused...

Richard threatened him.

"You'll lose much more than your business."

The old man's face turned white.

"It was you..."

Richard smiled.

"You remember."

The woman grabbed her father's arm.

"Dad, please!"

"You don't understand."

"He knows everything."

Richard slowly adjusted his expensive watch.

"I gave you both twenty-three peaceful years."

"You should have left the past buried."

Emma looked up innocently.

"Mommy..."

"Why is Grandpa scared of Daddy?"

No one answered.

Then...

A black envelope slid from Richard's briefcase onto the sidewalk.

The wind blew it open.

Old newspaper clippings scattered across the street.

One headline froze the old man's blood.

LOCAL BUSINESSMAN KILLED IN SUSPICIOUS FIRE. DAUGHTER PRESUMED DEAD.

Another article landed at his feet.

Across the front page was a photograph he had never seen before.

It showed Richard...

Standing beside the burning building...

Hours before the fire officially started.

The old man's hands began to shake violently.

He looked up at Richard.

"You..."

"You planned everything."

Richard's smile slowly disappeared.

"You were never supposed to see those."

At that exact moment...

Three black SUVs turned the corner.

Six men in dark suits stepped out.

May you like

And every one of them was walking toward Emma.
