CHAPTER 2: The Woman in the Black Car

Emma hid behind Ethan’s coat as the black sedan stopped in front of the mansion.
A tall woman stepped out.
Elegant. Cold. Smiling.
It was Ethan’s wife.
Victoria Blackwell.
Her eyes landed on the little girl, and for one terrifying second, her smile disappeared.
Then she looked at Ethan.
“Darling,” Victoria said softly, “why is there a child at our gate?”
Ethan didn’t answer.
He was still holding Sophia’s letter.
Victoria saw it.
Her face changed.
Only slightly.
But Ethan noticed.
For six years, Victoria had played the perfect wife—the woman who helped him survive Sophia’s “death,” the woman who comforted him at the funeral, the woman who later convinced him to marry again.
Now Ethan wondered if she had been comforting him…
Or controlling him.
Emma whispered, “That’s the lady Mommy said not to trust.”
Ethan’s blood turned cold.
Victoria walked closer.
“What did she say?”
Ethan slipped the letter into his pocket.
“Nothing.”
Victoria smiled again, but her voice sharpened.
“Give the child to security. We don’t know where she came from.”
Emma suddenly cried out, “No! She’ll send me back!”
The entire driveway went silent.
Ethan slowly turned to Victoria.
“Back where?”
Victoria’s smile vanished.
Before she could speak, Emma pulled a silver necklace from under her dress.
Inside the tiny locket was a photo.
Ethan took it with shaking hands.
It was Sophia.
Alive.
Holding a newborn baby.
And on the back of the photo, written in Sophia’s handwriting, were two words:
“Your daughter.”
Ethan staggered backward.
His perfect world cracked open.
Victoria’s voice trembled.
“Ethan, listen to me. This is a trick.”
But Emma pointed at her with tears in her eyes.
“No… she was there the night Mommy disappeared.”
Ethan looked at Victoria.
The woman he married.
The woman sleeping beside him every night.
The woman who had keys to every safe, every document, every secret.
And for the first time…
He saw fear in her eyes.
Then Emma whispered the words that made Ethan’s heart stop.
“Mommy said if I found you… ask about the blue room.”
Victoria screamed before Ethan could react.
“Enough!”
But it was too late.
Ethan remembered.
The blue room.
A locked room in the east wing Victoria had forbidden everyone from entering.
She claimed it was only storage.
Ethan turned toward the mansion.
“Open it.”
Victoria grabbed his arm.
“You don’t want to do that.”
Ethan’s voice dropped.
“Yes, I do.”
When the door to the blue room was finally unlocked…
Ethan stepped inside and found the one thing that proved his entire marriage was built on a lie.
On the wall were photos of Sophia.
Dozens of them.
Alive.
Pregnant.
Trapped.
And in the corner stood an old hospital crib…
With Emma’s name carved into the wood.
Ethan turned around slowly.
But Victoria was gone.
May you like
And so was Emma.
