CHAPTER 4: The Man Behind the Gun

Ethan slowly raised his hands.
The cold steel pressed harder against the back of his head.
"Turn around."
The voice was calm.
Almost familiar.
Ethan obeyed.
His heart nearly stopped.
Standing behind him wasn't a stranger.
It was Michael Carter—his personal head of security.
The man who had protected him for nearly fifteen years.
The man Ethan trusted with his life.
"Michael...?"
Michael lowered the gun only slightly.
"I'm sorry, sir."
"No... you're not."
Michael looked away.
"I never wanted Emma involved."
Ethan's blood ran cold.
"You know who she is."
Michael nodded.
"I've known since the day she was born."
Before Ethan could react, the mansion's backup generators roared to life.
The lights flickered on.
But the house looked completely different.
Every security monitor in the control room displayed the same message.
ACCESS OVERRIDDEN
NEW OWNER AUTHORIZED
Ethan stared in disbelief.
"What does that mean?"
Michael swallowed hard.
"It means... you haven't owned this company for years."
Ethan laughed in disbelief.
"That's impossible."
"I own seventy-two percent of Blackwell Global."
Michael slowly reached into his jacket and placed a thick folder on the floor.
"You did."
Ethan opened it.
Every page carried his signature.
Company transfers.
Asset sales.
Power-of-attorney documents.
Billions of dollars...
Quietly moved into another name.
One signature at a time.
His hands began to shake.
"I never signed these..."
Michael whispered,
"You did."
"When?"
"After every surgery."
Ethan frowned.
"What surgeries?"
Michael looked horrified.
"The migraines."
Memories flashed through Ethan's mind.
For years, Victoria insisted he suffered from a rare neurological condition.
Every few months...
He woke inside a private medical clinic with no memory of the previous day.
Doctors always said,
"Everything went well."
Victoria always held his hand.
She always smiled.
She always asked him to sign "routine insurance paperwork."
The folder slipped from Ethan's fingers.
"Oh my God..."
Michael nodded.
"They drugged you."
"They forged your life."
"And every signature was legal."
Suddenly...
Emma's terrified scream echoed through the mansion.
"Daddy!"
Ethan ran.
Michael didn't stop him.
Instead, he shouted,
"Third floor!"
Ethan burst into the old library.
The room was empty...
Except for a massive portrait of Blackwell Mansion hanging above the fireplace.
Emma's tiny voice came from behind the wall.
"I'm in here!"
Ethan searched frantically.
Then he noticed something strange.
The portrait wasn't fixed.
It was a hidden door.
He pulled it open.
A narrow hallway stretched into darkness.
At the end...
Emma sat tied to a chair.
Her mouth covered with tape.
She was crying.
Ethan rushed toward her.
"Emma!"
Just before he reached her...
Michael shouted from behind,
"STOP!"
Too late.
Ethan stepped on a pressure plate hidden beneath the carpet.
A loud metallic click echoed through the hallway.
The floor disappeared beneath his feet.
He plunged into darkness.
When he opened his eyes...
He wasn't alone.
Across the room...
Under a single hanging light...
A weak, exhausted woman slowly lifted her head.
Her face was pale.
Her wrists were chained.
Tears rolled down Ethan's face.
It was impossible.
After six years...
Sophia was alive.
She smiled through her tears.
"I knew you'd finally find me..."
Before Ethan could reach her...
A slow clap echoed through the underground chamber.
Someone stepped out of the shadows.
An elderly man wearing a tailored black suit.
Ethan's face turned white.
"No..."
The man smiled.
"Hello, son."
Ethan staggered backward.
"My father..."
"But..."
"You died twenty years ago."
The old man smiled wider.
May you like
"I made sure everyone believed that."
