Chapter 3 - THE VOICE FROM THE GRAVE

The static on the recording crackled sharply, followed by the chilling background sound of medical equipment humming—the unmistakable audio profile of a private clinic.

Camila’s voice came back on the recording, low, panicked, and raspy.

“Héctor, if you’re listening to this, it means I failed to escape. I tried to leave tonight, but Verónica locked the private wing. She thinks I don’t know what she’s doing, but I found her private notebook. The clinical trial she’s running... it’s not authorized by any medical board.”

Héctor pressed the recorder closer to his ear, his heart pounding against his ribs like a sledgehammer.

“She’s been secretly administering synthetic hormone blockers and low-dose neurological suppressants to me throughout my third trimester. She isn't trying to save my life, Héctor! She’s trying to induce early brain death so she can legally take custody of our unborn twins as their primary medical guardian!”

On the tape, the heavy sound of a door opening suddenly interrupted Camila’s desperate whispering.

“Who are you talking to, Camila?” a cold, clinical voice chimed in the background. It was unmistakable. It was Dr. Verónica Ibarra.

“Get away from me, Verónica!” Camila’s voice shrieked on the recording. “I know about the Swiss offshore accounts! I know why you persuaded Héctor to sign the medical power of attorney last month!”

A cold, cruel laugh echoed through the speaker—Verónica’s voice, entirely devoid of the warmth and empathy she had projected for months.

“Oh, Camila. Sweet, foolish Camila,” Verónica’s recorded voice purred. “Héctor is brilliant in the boardroom, but when it comes to you, he’s hopelessly naive. He signed everything. If you die in childbirth—which, given your sudden ‘eclamptic complications,’ is mathematically certainty—I become the sole administrator of the Salvatierra Twin Trust Fund. Two billion dollars, Camila. Do you really think I was going to spend my life as a glorified family doctor while you lived in luxury?”

“He will kill you when he finds out!” Camila screamed.

“He will never find out,” Verónica replied calmly on the recording. “Because by tomorrow morning, you will be dead, and Héctor will be a broken, grieving mess. I will manage his grief. I will manage his children. And eventually... I will manage his entire estate.”

The recording cut into a horrific chaos of scuffling, muffled cries, the sharp clatter of medical instruments, and then... the flatline alarm of a heart monitor.

Then, static.

The recording ended.

Héctor sat in the pitch-black study, the digital recorder slipping from his fingers and landing on the floor.

His whole world had just been torn into bleeding shreds.

Camila hadn't died from natural birth complications. She had been systematically murdered. Murdered by her best friend. Murdered under his own roof, right under his nose, while he had blindly signed every document, trusted every prescription, and paid millions of dollars to the killer.

And for five months, he had handed his precious, motherless twin sons over to the very woman who had slaughtered their mother.

"Monster..." Héctor whispered, his voice cracking into a jagged sob. "You absolute monster!"

Rage—pure, unadulterated, lethal rage—boiled through his veins. He stood up, knocking the heavy mahogany chair over, and grabbed his smartphone. He pulled up his contacts to call the Chief of Federal Police, a man who owed his career to Salvatierra funding.

He was going to have Verónica dragged to a federal prison in chains before sunrise.

But as his thumb hovered over the call button, another thought struck him like a bolt of lightning.

Why did Mariana know?

Mariana Torres had only worked in the house for seven days. Yet, hours ago, before she was thrown out, she had looked him dead in the eye and said: “The snake standing beside you doesn’t want to heal your sons. She wants to steal them.”

How could a simple housekeeper know about a multi-billion-dollar plot? How could she know that Verónica was a threat?

Héctor ran to the desk, pulled open his personal laptop, and accessed the mansion’s internal security database. He bypassed the main system and pulled up the employment records for Mariana Torres.

Her file had been personally delivered by a high-end staffing agency last week.

Héctor brought up her background check, run by his private security firm.

Name: Mariana Torres.

Age: 31.

Previous employment: Domestic worker in Guadalajara.

References: Checked.

Héctor’s eyes narrowed. He opened a deeper background trace using his corporate intelligence network. He ran her fingerprints—scanned when she signed her employment contract—through the national civil registry.

Ten seconds later, the screen flashed red.

ALERT: RECORD MATCH FOUND - ALTERNATE IDENTITY.

Héctor clicked the file. His breath hitched.

The photo on the screen was indeed Mariana Torres. But the name underneath it was completely different.

Dr. Mariana Torres-Vidal, M.D.

Former Chief of Pediatric Neurology – Mexico City General Hospital.

Status: License Revoked / Under Criminal Investigation (2025).

Héctor’s eyes widened as he read down the page.

One year ago, Dr. Mariana Torres had been one of the top pediatric neurologists in the country. But her license had been stripped, and she had been dragged through a public smear campaign after being accused of negligence in the death of a high-profile infant patient.

And the lead medical expert witness who had testified against her, destroyed her career, and revoked her license?

Dr. Verónica Ibarra.

Héctor stared at the glowing monitor, the pieces of the terrifying puzzle locking together in his mind.

Mariana wasn't a humble housekeeper who randomly applied for a job. She was a disgraced pediatric neurologist who had faked her credentials, lowered herself to scrubbing floors, and infiltrated the Salvatierra mansion.

She hadn't come for money. She had come for revenge against Verónica.

And in doing so, she was the only person standing between his twin sons and a silent death.

Suddenly, the security lights outside the mansion flashed violently through the study windows.

Héctor jumped to his feet and ran to the window.

Down at the front gate, two black SUVs with blacked-out windows had just breached the perimeter. Three armed men in tactical gear were moving silently across the manicured gardens toward the side entrance.

And leading them... was Dr. Verónica Ibarra.
