Chapter 1 - The Descent and the Deck

The air tore past my ears like razor blades. At six months pregnant, the rush of terminal velocity should have been an absolute death sentence, but as the wind howled around me, my hand didn't grope blindly for the empty sky—it triggered the heavy-duty micro-transmitter sewn directly into the reinforced lining of my cashmere maternity coat.

Three miles off the jagged cliffs of Big Sur, the ocean wasn't just water; it was the staging ground. Less than twenty seconds before Richard shoved me out, my private maritime security detail—a retired naval intelligence unit I’d quietly retained six months prior—had positioned our decoy vessel precisely beneath our flight path.

Thump.

The collision with the industrial-grade, pneumatic high-impact safety net concealed beneath the decoy boat's camouflage canopy knocked the breath violently from my lungs. Pain flared across my abdomen, sharp and terrifying, making me clutch my belly as stars danced in my vision.

"Amelia! Code Alpha! Status!" a rasps voice barked through the encrypted waterproof earpiece hidden in my ear canal.

"I'm... I'm breathing," I gasped, spitting seawater and bile as strong hands hauled me out of the webbing and onto the teak deck. Marcus, head of my security team, pressed an oxygen mask to my face. "The baby?"

"Moving," I whispered, tears blurring my vision as the sheer adrenaline crash hit me. "He's moving."

Above us, the rhythmic thrum of the Robinson R66 helicopter faded slightly as Richard executed a wide, triumphant arc to confirm his handiwork. He wouldn't circle back down; standard protocol for a man executing the "perfect crime" over open water was to let the tide bury the evidence. He wanted to ensure no body was ever recovered, leaving a convenient seven-year window before a legal declaration of death could grant him unfettered access to the Hayes Global holdings.

"Get me down to the lower cabin," I ordered, my voice dropping the trembling panic of the victim and hardening into the cold, calculating steel of a multi-billion-dollar CEO. "And patch me through to my corporate legal counsel, David Vance. It’s time to initiate Phase Two."

Marcus stared at me, a grim, respectful smirk touching his weathered lips. "Welcome back from the dead, Mrs. Hayes. Let’s go ruin a murderer."
