Chapter 4 - THE BILLIONAIRE’S FURYThe courtyard fell into a terrified, pin-drop silence. The only sound was the low, aggressive hum of the idling luxury sedan engine.

Marilyn stepped forward, her professional poise visibly cracking under the white-hot intensity of Julian Vance’s glare. She swallowed hard, her hands twitching against her skirt.

"Mr. Vance... Julian," Marilyn stammered, her voice pitching slightly higher than normal. "We are doing everything we can. Our security team is sweeping the perimeter sectors right now. The weather turned quickly, and—"

"Spare me the excuses, Marilyn!" Julian roared, taking a step forward that forced the manager to instinctively recoil. "My father has moderate cognitive decline. He doesn't know where he is half the time! That is why I pay this estate millions in security fees—to keep him safe, secure, and monitored twenty-four hours a day! If anything has happened to him..." He didn't finish the sentence, but the implication hung in the air like a guillotine blade.

Lily stood frozen near the edge of the pavilion, half-hidden behind a large concrete planter box. She watched as Julian’s fists clenched at his sides so tightly his knuckles turned chalk-white.

"Sir," one of the head security guards stepped up nervously, holding a portable radio. "We’ve checked the east wing, the clubhouse, the underground parking levels, and the perimeter gates. His keycard hasn't registered at any turnstile since yesterday evening. He... he must have walked out through the service gate before the automated locks engaged."

"The service gate?" Julian’s voice dropped to a lethal, dangerous whisper. "The service gate is a construction and maintenance zone! There are delivery trucks, heavy machinery, and open drainage ditches out there! Why wasn't someone watching that sector?"

Marilyn exchanged a panicked glance with the security chief before offering a swift, cowardly deflection. "Well, sir, with all due respect, Mr. Vance preferred his privacy. He often pushed against the caregivers we assigned. In fact... well, truth be told, he was sometimes difficult to manage because of outside distractions."

"What distractions?" Julian demanded, his eyes narrowing.

"Well... unauthorized people on the grounds," Marilyn hedged, smoothly pivoting to protect her own negligence. "Children from the local neighborhood sometimes wander in through the service lane. We’ve tried to chase them off, but—"

Lily’s breath hitched. She knew what Marilyn was doing. The manager was setting her up—laying the groundwork to blame the cleaning lady’s daughter for the missing billionaire father, saving her own skin at Lily's expense.

Anger surged through Lily, hot and blinding, overriding her fear. She couldn't let them blame Clara. She stepped out from behind the planter box, her small frame cutting across the open stone courtyard.

"That's a lie!" Lily's clear, ringing voice cut straight through the tense atmosphere.

Every head in the courtyard snapped toward her. Marilyn’s face drained of what little color it had left, her eyes widening in sheer panic.

"Who let this child in here?" Marilyn shrieked, lunging forward as if to physically intercept Lily. "Get her away from Mr. Vance immediately! Security!"

Two guards moved forward, but Julian Vance raised a single hand.

"Stop," Julian commanded, his deep voice carrying an absolute authority that froze the guards in their tracks. He turned his piercing blue eyes away from Marilyn and locked them onto Lily. He looked her up and down—the faded backpack, the scuffed sneakers, the defiant tilt of her chin.

"You," Julian said, his voice dangerously soft as he walked toward her. "You said that's a lie. What do you know about my father?"
