Chapter 9 - The Fall of the SyndicateThe financial strike was executed at 3:00 a.m. with the precision of a military drone attack.

Working from her terminal on the forty-second floor with Julian Vance and two elite cyber-forensic specialists, Adelaide authorized a series of cascading digital transfers, legal injunctions, and asset freezes that systematically dismantled Salvatore Moretti’s empire before the old mob boss even woke up.

By 6:00 a.m., Moretti’s primary shell companies in the Cayman Islands were locked down by international banking authorities.

By 9:00 a.m., three federal judges—long on Moretti’s payroll—received emergency freeze orders on all hidden assets due to sudden, unflagged anomalies in their campaign finance audits, courtesy of Adelaide’s meticulous tracking.

By noon, Moretti’s enforcers in South Brooklyn walked off the job because their weekly syndicate payouts bounced due to frozen accounts.

At 2:00 p.m., Salvatore Moretti himself—furious, desperate, and completely cornered—stormed into the lobby of Rosetti Holdings with two armed bodyguards, bypassing security in a blind rage to get to the top floor.

He never made it past the thirty-fifth floor.

Maxim’s men intercepted them in the elevator corridor. There were no gunshots—just the cold, efficient application of overwhelming force. Within sixty seconds, Moretti’s bodyguards were disarmed, and Moretti was shoved violently through the double doors of Maxim’s private office, landing hard on his knees before the mahogany desk.

Maxim was sitting in his leather chair, calmly sipping black coffee from a plain white ceramic mug.

Adelaide was standing by the window, tablet in hand, watching the old mob boss panting on the floor like a stranded fish.

Moretti looked up, his face purple with rage, his old eyes glaring venomously at Maxim. "You think this makes you smart, Rosetti? You think freezing my accounts—"

"It's not just frozen accounts, Salvatore," Adelaide interrupted, stepping forward from the window. She tapped her tablet and dropped a final printed document onto the floor right in front of Moretti’s face.

Moretti looked down. It was a federal indictment charging him with racketeering, wire fraud, pension embezzlement, and money laundering—complete with signed affidavits, bank routing numbers, and a complete ledger of every bribe he had paid over the last decade.

"The FBI already has copies," Adelaide said smoothly. "By tomorrow morning, federal agents will be raiding your estates in Staten Island, your social clubs in Little Italy, and your daughter’s front-company real estate office in Miami. Your empire is gone, Salvatore. You just don't know it yet."

Moretti stared at the paper, his mouth opening and closing like a fish out of water. All the power, all the terror, all the decades of untouchable dominance had evaporated into a single stack of paper compiled by a woman who used to serve coffee and bacon at three in the morning.

"Who... who the hell are you?" Moretti whispered, trembling with impotent rage.

Maxim stood up slowly from his desk, walking around the wood until he stood right beside Adelaide. He slipped one arm casually around her waist, pulling her slightly against his side in a gesture of undeniable, absolute possession.

"This," Maxim said softly, looking down at Moretti with cold, regal contempt, "is Adelaide Callahan. The only woman in New York who could save my empire... and the one who just ended yours."
