Chapter 5 - The Glass Castle Crumbles

“You set this all up,” Adrian wheezed, struggling to stand up, but Dr. Reed slammed his boot hard onto Adrian’s chest, pinning him to the damp floor.
“Don't bother struggling, Mr. Hale,” Dr. Reed smirked, pulling a oversized syringe filled with a milky liquid from his coat pocket. “This is a lethal dose of concentrated potassium chloride. It stops the heart in less than twenty seconds. The police will find you and your beloved wife dead in a tragic murder-suicide brought on by your sudden financial bankruptcy.”
“My mother... she trusted you, Julian!” Adrian spat, blood filling his mouth.
Julian chuckled darkly. “Your mother thinks she’s the puppet master. She actually believes I’m going to share power with her after tonight. What she doesn't know is that the police are already on their way here right now—tipped off by an anonymous source: me. They will find your mother’s forged signatures on the offshore transfer documents and Dr. Reed’s medical order forms in her safe. She takes the entire fall for your deaths.”
“You’re a monster,” Claire weakly sobbed from the gurney, tears streaming through the grime on her cheeks.
“I’m an opportunist,” Julian corrected coldly. “Now, Dr. Reed, finish it. We have five minutes before the police sirens reach the gate.”
Dr. Reed nodded, uncapping the long needle of the syringe. He bent down over Adrian, pressing the sharp metal tip against the bare skin of Adrian’s neck.
“Say goodbye to your empire, Adrian,” Reed whispered.
BANG! BANG!
Two sharp gunshots echoed through the subterranean cellar, shattering the silence.
Dr. Reed shrieked in agony as a bullet tore through his shoulder, dropping the syringe onto the concrete where it shattered into a hundred harmless pieces.
Julian spun around in shock, aiming his gun into the gloom. “Who’s there?!”
Out of the shadows stepped Marcus Vance, flanked by four heavily armed private security operators wearing tactical gear. Marcus held a smoking 9mm pistol in his firm grip.
“Drop the weapon, Julian!” Marcus shouted, his voice echoing like thunder in the enclosed space.
Julian’s eyes darted frantically between Marcus and the tactical team. “Marcus! What are you doing?! I paid you double what Hale was paying!”
“You paid me to keep quiet about Victoria,” Marcus growled. “You didn't tell me you were planning to murder a mother and father in cold blood. I have a daughter, Julian. Some lines you don't cross.”
Julian panicked, raising his revolver toward Marcus.
BANG!
Marcus fired instantly. The bullet struck Julian cleanly in the knee. Julian screamed, dropping his weapon and collapsing to the ground, clutching his shattered leg as blood pooled onto the stone floor.
Within seconds, the tactical team tackled Dr. Reed to the ground, securing him in heavy plastic zip-ties.
Adrian scrambled up off the floor, throwing his arms around Claire and unbuckling her remaining restraints. He pulled her frail body into his chest, holding her tight as she sobbed uncontrollably.
“I’ve got you,” Adrian wept, kissing her forehead. “I’ve got you, Claire. It’s over. You’re safe.”
“Adrian...” Claire whimpered, her face buried in his shoulder. “Emma... is Emma okay?”
“She’s safe with Rosa,” Adrian assured her. “It’s all over.”
Ten minutes later, flashing red and blue lights illuminated the grand driveway of St. Jude’s Sanatorium. Police cruisers and ambulances filled the courtyard. Dr. Reed and a screaming, bleeding Julian were hauled out in handcuffs and loaded into separate police vans.
Adrian walked out of the entrance carrying Claire in his arms, wrapped in a heavy warm blanket. As he approached the lead police cruiser, he saw his mother, Victoria Hale, standing by the rear door of a squad car, her hands cuffed behind her back.
Victoria’s face was pale, her immaculate hair ruined by the rain. When she saw Adrian and Claire alive, her eyes filled with frantic desperation.
“Adrian! My son!” Victoria cried out, trying to step toward him, but an officer held her back. “You have to listen to me! Julian tricked me! Dr. Reed tricked me! I was only trying to protect the family name! I didn't know they were going to hurt you!”
Adrian stopped in front of his mother. He looked down at her with cold, unyielding eyes—eyes that held no affection, no pity, and no forgiveness.

“You stripped my daughter of her clothes and made her scrub her mother’s blood,” Adrian said, his voice icy and low. “You aren't my mother anymore, Victoria. You’re just a convict.”
Victoria gasped as the officer shoved her into the back of the police cruiser and slammed the door shut.
