Chapter 1 - The Resignation That Blew the Vault Wide OpenThe car drifted to a halt in front of Adrian Cross’s high-security private compound in Lincoln Park. The heater hummed softly, but the air inside the vehicle was suddenly freezing.

Adrian stared at Audrey. The blue light from the dashboard cast stark shadows over her bruised cheek, making the violet swelling look even more menacing.

"You should resign," she had said.

Now, she didn't look away. Her posture was stiff, her single working arm clutched tight against the wool coat he had wrapped her in.

"Explain," Adrian said. His voice was dangerously low, stripped of all warmth.

"If they know who I am, and they know I work for you, then my presence here is a liability," Audrey whispered, her voice cracking slightly. "I am an accountant, Adrian. A glorified math geek with a talent for spreadsheets and corporate shell companies. I am not built for turf wars, blown-up cars, or hospital bays at two in the morning. If I stay, they will use me again. And next time, they won't just ask about a financial hold."

Adrian didn't blink. He reached across the console, his large hand gently wrapping around her uninjured wrist. The touch was so uncharacteristic that Audrey stopped breathing entirely.

"Look at me, Audrey."

She forced her eyes up to meet his dark, unreadable gaze.

"In five years, have I ever lost a piece of property I cared to keep?"

"No."

"Have I ever failed to collect a debt?"

"No."

"Then listen to me very carefully," Adrian said, leaning in just enough that she could feel the heat radiating from him. "You are not a liability. You are the vault. And nobody—nobody—gets to touch what belongs in my vault without paying in blood."

He put the car in park, got out, and walked around to her side. Before she could protest, he opened the door, scooped her up effortlessly into his arms, and carried her through the rain toward the heavy steel-reinforced doors of his estate.

As the locks clicked shut behind them, Adrian Cross made a silent vow: The men who touched Audrey would spend their final hours begging for a math problem just to take their minds off the pain.
