Chapter 6 - The Liquidation of the TraitorsWithin forty-eight hours, the underworld of Chicago experienced an earthquake unlike anything it had seen in decades.

It wasn't a turf war fought with Tommy guns or car bombs. It was an execution carried out by double-entry bookkeeping and federal asset forfeiture.

Sitting in the private study of the Lincoln Park estate, Audrey—her arm still in a sling, a fresh cup of green tea resting beside her keyboard—moved her mouse with cold, calculated efficiency.

Adrian stood behind her chair, one hand resting lightly on the high back of the leather seat, watching the monitors.

"Vanguard Maritime assets?" Adrian asked.

"Frozen," Audrey replied, clicking a final authorization box. "All offshore accounts seized under anti-money laundering statutes we secretly drafted last year. Marcus’s shell companies have been legally dissolved. His real estate holdings in Miami, Zurich, and Chicago are now fully transferred to Cross Holdings."

"And Marcus himself?"

"Federal penitentiary, maximum security wing, solitary confinement," Audrey said without looking up. "His trial was waived due to overwhelming financial evidence. He doesn't even have enough commissary credit to buy a pack of cigarettes."

Adrian let out a slow breath. He reached down, gently taking the mouse from her hand and turning her chair around so she was forced to look at him.

"You should be resting in bed," he said, his tone softening into something almost gentle.

"I can't rest while my ledgers are unbalanced," Audrey replied, though a faint, tired smile touched her lips. "Besides, someone has to make sure you aren't running the empire into the ground while I'm recovering."

Adrian chuckled—a low, genuine sound that he rarely shared with the world. He leaned down, resting one hand on the arm of her chair, bringing his face dangerously close to hers.

"Audrey," he murmured softly. "For five years, everyone in Chicago thought you were just my secretary."

"And what do they think now?"

May you like

"They know," Adrian said, his dark eyes locking onto hers with burning intensity, "that you are the woman who holds the keys to my kingdom. And God help anyone who ever looks at you sideways again."

Audrey's breath hitched. For the first time in five years, the professional mask she wore vanished entirely, replaced by a quiet, undeniable warmth.
