Chapter 4 - THE SNAKE IN THE BOARDROOM"Cut off the head of the snake, and the body will wriggle. Destroy the nest, and the species goes extinct."

The fall of the Vance family shook the high-society circles of New York like a localized earthquake.
Within forty-eight hours, Arthur, Margaret, and Andrew Vance were all held in federal custody without bail, facing a wall of charges that guaranteed they would spend the rest of their natural lives behind bars. Chloe Vance, left completely penniless and abandoned by her wealthy friends, was forced to check into a women's shelter after her luxury apartment in Manhattan was sealed by federal marshals.
But I wasn't finished.
A fraud scheme of this magnitude couldn't have functioned without an insider inside the regulatory network—a dirty player who tipped off the Vances every time an audit was requested.
That insider was Julian Sterling—my uncle.
The man who had tried to steal Sterling Horizon Holdings from me after my father passed away six years ago.
Two days after Andrew’s arrest, I sat at the head of the dark mahogany conference table on the top floor of the Sterling Horizon Tower in Manhattan. The glass walls offered a sweeping view of Central Park, but the mood inside the room was thunderous.
Seated across from me was Julian Sterling. He looked immaculate in a three-piece Italian suit, though the slight twitch in his right eyelid betrayed his composure.
"Victoria," Julian said, offering a patronizing smile as he poured himself a glass of sparkling water. "I must say, your handling of the Vance family was... theatrical. A bit public for my taste, but effective. You purged the bad debt quite efficiently."
"I don't play theatrical games, Julian," I said, resting my hands flat on the glass table. "I eliminate threats."
Julian chuckled softly, taking a sip of his water. "Of course. But let’s be frank. You brought me here today because you need the board’s support to settle the liabilities left behind by Vance Hospitality. And as the chairman of the executive board, my vote is crucial."
"I didn't invite you here to ask for your vote, Julian," I said, signaling to Harper who was standing near the door.
Harper walked forward and laid a thick yellow envelope directly in front of Julian.
Julian’s smile faltered slightly. "What is this?"
"That is the paper trail connecting your personal offshore entity in Zurich to Arthur Vance’s fraud accounts," I explained smoothly. "You were taking a 15% kickback on every fraudulent transaction Arthur executed. You used your board clearance to override our internal compliance flags, shielding the Vance family from suspicion for over three years."
Julian’s face hardened into a mask of pure venom. He didn't open the envelope. Instead, he slowly leaned back in his chair.
"You think you’re so smart, don't you, little girl?" Julian sneered, his smooth upper-class accent dropping away to reveal a harsh, gutteral tone. "You inherited your father’s company, but you lack his restraint. You think those documents prove anything? They are routed through three layers of anonymous holding trusts. No federal prosecutor can tie those accounts to me."
"They don't have to," I replied softly. "Because I didn't send those documents to the Department of Justice."
Julian paused, his eyes narrowing. "What?"
"If I gave them to the DOJ, you’d hire a team of high-priced lawyers, stall the trial for five years, and end up in a comfortable minimum-security facility," I said, leaning forward until I was looking directly into his soul. "I sent those documents to your private investors in Dubai and Singapore. The men whose money you laundered through Arthur Vance’s fake real estate developments."
Julian’s skin turned a ghastly shade of grey. The glass of water in his hand began to tremble violently.
"You... you gave my records to the Al-Mansoor Group?" Julian whispered, horror paralyzing his lungs.
"They are very particular about their money, Julian," I smiled—a cold, beautiful, predatory smile. "And when they found out an hour ago that $120 million of their capital was lost because of your greed... they revoked your personal credit lines, seized your yacht in Monaco, and dispatched their legal recovery team to New York."
Before Julian could speak, his personal smartphone began to ring frantically on the table. Then it buzzed again. And again. Text messages and urgent notifications flooded his screen like a cascading waterfall of ruin.
"You're a demon..." Julian choked out, grabbing his chest as if he couldn't catch his breath. "You destroyed your own uncle!"
"You aren't my uncle," I said, standing up from my chair and buttoning my suit jacket. "You’re just another predator who thought a woman in power was weak enough to be manipulated. You, Andrew, Arthur... you all suffer from the same fatal flaw."
May you like
"What flaw?" Julian spat, tears of rage threatening to break from his eyes.
"You mistake silence for weakness," I said, turning my back on him as I walked toward the floor-to-ceiling glass doors. "Harper, revoke Mr. Sterling’s security clearance immediately. Escort him out through the service elevator so the reporters waiting downstairs don't miss his exit."
