Chapter 1 - "SHE HURTS ME EVERY DAY!" — THE WORDS THAT UNMASKED A MONSTER

The silver picture frame shattered into a hundred jagged pieces across the hardwood floor, but no one in the room moved to pick up the glass. Little Sophie’s trembling body pressed so hard against Mark’s chest that he could feel the frantic, rabbit-fast thumping of her tiny heart through his suit jacket. Her small fingernails dug into his collar, white-knuckled, tears streaking through the light dust on her cheeks.
"Daddy… she hurts me every day!" Sophie sobbed, her voice cracking into a high-pitched whisper that sliced through the silent living room like a blade. "When you go to work, she locks me in the dark cabinet under the stairs. She tells me if I tell you, she’ll make you disappear forever!"
Vanessa stood near the marble fireplace, clutching her glass of Pinot Noir. Her flawless makeup didn't twitch, but her grip on the stem tighted until her knuckles turned ghostly pale. A soft, mocking chuckle escaped her lips as she took a slow step forward, her high heels clicking rhythmically against the polished floor.
"Mark, darling, you can't possibly listen to this ridiculous fantasy," Vanessa said smoothly, her voice oozing synthetic warmth. "The child has an overactive imagination. She’s throwing a tantrum because I wouldn't let her eat ice cream before dinner. She’s trying to turn you against me, just like her therapist warned us."
"Liar!" Sophie screamed, hiding her face in Mark’s shoulder. "She pinched my arms until they went black and blue! Check my back, Daddy! Check my back!"
Mark’s jaw set hard. Slowly, gently, he unclasped Sophie’s arms and lifted her shirt. Across her delicate ribcage lay a constellation of deep, yellowing bruises and fresh red welts.
Vanessa’s breath hitched. "She falling down the playground stairs at school! I told you about that on Tuesday, Mark! You remember!"
Mark stood up. At six-foot-two, his shadow completely engulfed Vanessa. The warmth that usually filled his warm brown eyes was entirely gone, replaced by a cold, deadly stillness that made Vanessa take a nervous step back. He didn't raise his voice. He didn't shout. Instead, he reached into his inner jacket pocket and pulled out a faded, yellowed manila folder.
"I didn't believe the bruises were from the playground, Vanessa," Mark said softly, his voice vibrating with absolute disgust. "So three days ago, I hired a private investigator to dig into your background. I wanted to know where my sweet, affectionate wife learned to be so cruel."
Vanessa’s confidence flickered. "What are you talking about? My past has nothing to do with—"

"I know what happened to Arthur Vance, Vanessa," Mark interrupted, dropping the manila folder onto the coffee table. Photos spilled out across the mahogany wood—crime scene photographs, police reports, and a death certificate. "Your first husband. The rich real estate mogul who supposedly suffered a sudden, fatal heart attack eight years ago, three days after naming you the sole beneficiary of his twenty-million-dollar life insurance policy."
Vanessa’s face went instantly, completely pale. The glass of wine slipped from her fingers, smashing onto the rug, soaking the white fabric in deep crimson blood-red.
