Chapter 4 - The Gala of Reckoning

The ballroom of the Beverly Hills Hotel was bathed in golden light. Crystal chandeliers glittered overhead as hundreds of Los Angeles’s elite—investors, politicians, tech tycoons, and press—mangled over champagne and orchestral music.

Daniel stood by my side, acting the part of the devoted, proud husband. But every few minutes, he would glance at his watch.

8:45 PM. Fifteen minutes until the stage presentation.

I watched Julianna across the room. She was wearing a midnight-blue gown, nervously pacing near the audiovisual booth near the back of the ballroom. She gave Daniel a quick, imperceptible nod.

They thought they were in control. They believed that when the presentation started, the slide deck on that USB drive would trigger an automated legal filing sequence transferred through a rogue server, finalizing my resignation and transferring voting control to Julianna due to "incapacitation" or "financial negligence."

"I'm going to check on the stage setup," I told Daniel, patting his arm.

"Don't take too long, honey," he said, kissing my cheek. His lips felt like ice. "It's your big moment."

"Oh, it certainly is," I replied.

Instead of going to the stage, I walked straight to the AV booth. Julianna was standing outside, nervously sipping champagne. When she saw me, she nearly dropped her glass.

"Victoria! What are you doing back here?"

"Just making sure the media presentation is ready," I said, nodding to the AV technician inside.

"It's all loaded," the technician confirmed, holding up the black USB drive I had given Julianna earlier. "Ready to project to the main screens on your mark, Ms. Vance."

"Excellent," I said. "Julianna, why don't you join Daniel near the front row? You'll want a front-row seat for this."

She hesitated, her eyes flickering with deep anxiety, but she turned and walked away.

At 8:58 PM, the lights in the ballroom dimmed. The chatter faded to a respectful hush.

I walked onto the main stage, the spotlight tracking my every step. The applause echoed off the walls. I stood behind the podium, looking out at the sea of faces. In the center row, Daniel and Julianna stood side-by-side.

"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," I began, my voice clear and unwavering over the loudspeaker. "Tonight was meant to be a celebration of our company's incredible growth over the past year. But true leadership requires absolute transparency."

Daniel frowned in the audience. He shifted uncomfortably.

"Building a empire requires immense trust," I continued, holding up a small remote control. "You trust your partners. You trust your executives. And, most importantly, you trust your family."

I clicked the button.

The massive LED screens behind me roared to life.

Instead of corporate charts or financial projections, high-definition audio and video suddenly filled the room.

It was an audio recording—crystal clear, amplified through the hotel’s powerful sound system.

"...when she leaves for Chicago, they’ll finally have enough time to finish everything at the bank..." Daniel’s recorded voice boomed through the ballroom.

A collective gasp rippled through the hundreds of guests.

Then came Julianna’s distinct laugh through the speakers: "And the insurance policy? Are you sure the clause is solid?"

"It's bulletproof," Daniel’s voice replied on the recording. "By the time she realizes what happened, she won't have a penny left to hire a lawyer, and I'll control the entire board."

The ballroom erupted into instant chaos.

Daniel’s face turned ghastly gray. Julianna let out a strangled shriek, dropping her champagne glass, which shattered loudly on the parquet floor.

"What is the meaning of this?!" Daniel screamed, taking a step toward the stage, but two heavy-set security guards immediately blocked his path.

"The meaning, Daniel," I said into the microphone, my voice echoing over the uproar, "is that you are finished."
