Chapter 6 - The Final Betrayal

Three months later.
The dust had settled, but the legal carnage had been absolute. Julianna had taken a plea deal, agreeing to testify against Daniel in exchange for a reduced sentence for corporate fraud. Daniel, facing federal wire fraud, attempted grand larceny, and conspiracy charges, was looking at fifteen years in federal prison.
The court had granted me an expedited divorce, full legal and physical custody of Liam, and a complete restoration of all corporate IP and assets. The story had dominated business headlines for weeks, turning my firm into a symbol of resilience and surging our stock price to an all-time high.
It was a rainy Tuesday afternoon when I received a call from the prison where Daniel was being held pending final sentencing. He had used his one allowed legal request to beg for a ten-minute visitation with me before his transfer to a federal facility.
Eleanor advised against it, but I needed to close this chapter forever.
I sat behind the thick glass divider in the visitor's room. Daniel walked in, wearing an orange jumpsuit. He had lost weight. His hair was messy, and the polished charm was completely stripped away.
He sat down and picked up the heavy plastic phone. I picked up mine.
"You came," he said, his voice raspy.
"I have five minutes, Daniel. Say what you have to say."
"I was wrong," he stammered, his eyes desperate. "Julianna... she manipulated me, Victoria. She set the whole offshore plan in motion. I was just trapped in her web. I still love you. I love Liam. Please, use your legal influence to speak to the prosecutor. Don't let them send me away for fifteen years."
I stared at him through the glass. The fact that he was still trying to blame someone else, still trying to play the victim, made me realize just how deeply I had misjudged him for eleven years.
"You tried to ruin my life, Daniel," I said softly. "You tried to take my son's future away. You don't get mercy."
Daniel’s face suddenly hardened. The pathetic, begging expression vanished, replaced by a cold, venomous sneer.
"You think you won, don't you, Victoria?" he whispered into the phone, pressing his face against the glass. "You think you got away with everything."
"I didn't 'get away' with anything," I said. "I defended what was mine."
Daniel let out a low, unsettling laugh.
"Check your father's original trust fund documents, Victoria. The ones from twenty years ago. The ones your dear old dad set up before he passed away."
I frowned, a sudden cold knot forming in my stomach. "What are you talking about?"
"You always thought your father built that initial capital through standard real estate, didn't you?" Daniel chuckled darkly. "Why do you think I married you, Vic? You think I just fell in love with a smart girl in law school? I spent two years digging through your family history before I ever asked you out."
My heart hammered against my ribs. "What did you do?"
"I didn't forge those notary papers last week, Victoria," Daniel smiled, a terrifyingly triumphant look in his eyes. "I just uncovered the truth. Your father didn't leave you that money. He stole it from my family's estate thirty years ago. I didn't come into your life to rob you... I came to take back what was stolen from my father."
The room seemed to tilt.
"You're lying," I whispered.
"Am I?" Daniel raised an eyebrow. "Ask your attorney to look at File 1994-B in the county archives. The lawsuit was buried, but the debt was real. Even from this prison cell, Victoria, the lawsuit my brother just filed against your company this morning will tie up your entire fortune in probate court for the next decade. You might have sent me to jail... but your father's legacy is about to burn your company to the ground."
The guard tapped on Daniel’s shoulder, signaling that his time was up.
Daniel slowly hung up the phone, gave me a sickening, slow smile, and walked back toward the cell block.
I sat frozen, the phone receiver trembling in my hand.
I had won the war against my husband, but as I walked out of the prison into the cold California rain, my phone buzzed with an urgent notification from my attorney.
Victoria, we have an emergency. A mystery plaintiff just filed an injunction against your firm's entire treasury...

I closed my eyes, took a deep breath, and unlocked my car.
The battle with Daniel was over. But the true war for my family's survival had just begun.
