Chapter 1 - The Weight of a Secret“Because,” Adeline said without looking up, her gloved hands already inside a ragged laceration on the third man's abdomen, “someone has to keep his liver from pushing through his ribs while I tie off this bleeder, and your shoulders are big enough not to shake. Now hold it.”

Rafael dropped.

The heavy fabric of his coat scraped against the cracked tile, but he didn't flinch. His gaze remained locked on Adeline’s hands, tracking the terrifying efficiency with which she worked. She didn't panic when the blood spurted. She didn't hesitate when the monitors flickered and died. She just used her own fingers as clamps, relying on muscle memory and sheer, stubborn survival instinct.

Two hours later, all nine men were stable, breathing with the steady, heavy rhythm of the deeply unconscious.

That was when Rafael stood, took three steps, and the adrenaline crash hit him with the force of a tidal wave. His knees buckled.

Adeline caught his good arm just in time, guiding him down to a metal folding chair before he could crack his skull against the floor.

“Drink this,” she ordered, thrusting a paper cup of warm, salty bouillon into his hand.

Rafael stared at the cup, then up at Adeline. Her face was pale, smeared with grease and dried blood, her dark hair coming loose from its pins. Yet her eyes were clear, fierce, and entirely unbowed.

“You aren't just an overnight nurse,” Rafael murmured, his voice thick with exhaustion.

“I’m the only overnight nurse,” she snapped, turning away to check Tobias’s IV drip. “And right now, you’re in violation of my clinic's occupancy limits, health code regulations, and my absolute limit on patience. Get your men out of here before the sun comes up, or I’ll call the state police myself.”

Rafael didn't move. He sat in the chair, watching her shadow against the peeling paint of the hallway.

He didn't trust easily. In his world, everyone had a price, an angle, or a hidden knife. But Adeline Cross had risked her license, her job, and her meager safety to save nine men she didn't know, simply because they were bleeding on her floor.

He wanted to know why.
