Chapter 2 - The Unraveling of the Heiresses

The silence in the grand drawing room of the Vale estate was so heavy that the soft ticking of the grandfather clock sounded like falling hammers. Marcus Bell stood frozen, holding the folder containing Elena’s financial records. His mouth opened slightly, but no sound escaped.

Celeste Arden was the first to break the stillness, her voice sharp with disbelief. "Three million dollars? On slums and strangers? She stole from you, Adrian! She used your black card to fund a personal charity project! That’s fraudulent misuse of funds!"

Bianca Rowe stepped forward, adjusting her diamond necklace, her eyes flashing with fury. "Adrian, you cannot be serious. We bought items of value—assets! Jewelry, luxury vehicles, prime real estate in Monaco. Those are investments! She threw your money into a furnace of street paupers who will never return a single cent!"

Elena did not flinch. She stood near the edge of the mahogany table, her hands folded neatly in front of her gray uniform. Her face remained unreadable, calm, and entirely unbothered by the venom directed at her.

Adrian didn’t look at Celeste or Bianca. His gaze remained locked on Elena. "East Harbor," he said softly, his deep voice carrying a strange edge. "That complex was condemned by the city six months ago. It was owned by Sterling Holdings—a shell company under investigation for money laundering. How did you acquire it in under forty-eight hours?"

"Sterling Holdings was forced into emergency liquidation yesterday morning at 8:00 AM," Elena replied smoothly, her voice crisp and refined. "I monitored the auction. I purchased the debt deed for $1.8 million, cleared the municipal liens, and transferred the title into an independent land trust protecting forty-two families from immediate eviction."

Vanessa King’s eyes narrowed. "You monitored an auction? You’re a maid. You sweep floors and clean silver."

"I clean what needs to be cleaned," Elena said quietly, turning her calm eyes toward Vanessa. "Including trash that thinks it can hide behind senator fathers and offshore tax havens."

Vanessa gasped, taking a step back as if struck.

"Enough," Adrian commanded. The room fell instantly silent. He stood up slowly, all six-foot-three of his imposing frame radiating a cold, dangerous authority. He walked past Marcus, past the three socialites, and stopped directly in front of Elena.

He reached into his jacket pocket and pulled out the central ledger of Vale Enterprises—a confidential report only his inner circle possessed.

"Marcus," Adrian said without turning around. "Why did Elena’s report include property deeds from Sterling Holdings when that company’s private portfolio was classified under our private corporate merger files?"

Marcus swallowed hard, sweat glinting on his forehead. "I... I have no idea, Adrian. She must have stumbled upon it through public domain—"

"No," Elena interrupted, pulling a small silver flash drive from her pocket and placing it gently on the mahogany table. "She didn't stumble upon anything. I bought those properties because three weeks ago, Marcus Bell signed an illegal wire transfer routing $50 million of Vale Enterprises' capital into Sterling Holdings—co-signed by Senator King, Vanessa’s father."

The air left the room in an instant.

Vanessa turned pale as chalk. Celeste’s eyes widened in horror. Marcus took a involuntary step back toward the exit.

"What did you say?" Adrian’s voice dropped to a whisper that cut colder than ice.

"Your four-card test wasn't Marcus's idea to test these women's character," Elena said, her eyes piercing through the room. "It was a distraction. Marcus needed you focused on finding a bride so you wouldn't notice the final liquidation of your East Harbor development fund tonight at midnight."

Adrian picked up the flash drive, his jaw clenched tight. He looked at Celeste, Bianca, and Vanessa.

"Get out," Adrian whispered.

"Adrian, darling, she’s lying!" Celeste cried out, reaching for his arm. "She’s a servant trying to frame us!"

"GET OUT!" Adrian roared, his voice echoing off the vaulted ceilings.

Security guards flooded into the room, swiftly escorting the three weeping, shouting women off the premises. Marcus stood paralyzed near the doorway.

"And you, Marcus," Adrian said, turning slowly toward his trusted advisor of twelve years. "You stay right where you are."

Elena looked at Adrian, her calm expression giving way to something far deeper—a shadow of a past Adrian had forgotten, but was about to violently remember.
