Chapter 7 - The ReckoningThe hammer fell fast and mercilessly.

One week later, a federal grand jury issued a multi-count indictment against both Brandon Miller and Nicole Vance-Miller.

Nicole was arrested at a high-end salon in downtown Boston. The news crews were already waiting outside—tipped off by an anonymous source—capturing every humiliating second as federal agents led my sister out in handcuffs, her face covered with her designer handbag to hide from the flashing cameras.

The story exploded on social media.

“Entitled Sister and Husband Try to Steal Parents’ Beach Mansion—End Up in Federal Custody!”

The comment section on every major news outlet was filled with hundreds of thousands of people praising the justice served. Brandon’s arrogant video clips from his old corporate social media accounts were re-uploaded and mocked worldwide.

On a rainy Tuesday morning, I stood in the back of the federal courtroom in Boston for their arraignment hearing.

Brandon sat at the defense table, wearing an orange jumpsuit, his hair messily unkempt, looking like a broken shell of the man who had yelled in my father's face just days prior. Beside him sat Nicole, crying hysterically as her public defender tried in vain to comfort her.

Their high-priced private attorneys had dropped them the moment all their bank accounts were frozen by the federal government.

The judge slammed her gavel down with thunderous authority.

"Mr. Miller, Mrs. Miller, the charges against you—including grand fraud, wire fraud, conspiracy to commit money laundering, and elder financial abuse—are among the most egregious displays of predatory greed this court has seen in years," Judge Katherine Mercer declared, her voice echoing through the courtroom. "Bail is set at $2 million each. Given the flight risk and severity of the charges, you will remain in federal custody until trial."

Nicole shrieked, collapsing against the table. "No! Please! Your Honor! It was all Brandon! I didn't know! I’m the victim here! Ryan! Tell them! Tell them I’m your sister!"

She turned toward the back of the courtroom, her bloodshot eyes locking onto mine.

"Ryan! Save me! Please! I'm your sister! You can't let them do this to me!"

The entire courtroom turned to look at me. The reporters, the marshals, the public spectators—everyone waited to see if the wealthy tech mogul brother would show mercy.

I stood there in my dark suit, my hands folded neatly in front of me. I looked directly at Nicole.

I didn't utter a word. I simply gave her a quiet, final nod of farewell.

"Take the defendants into custody," the judge ordered.

The federal marshals grabbed Brandon and Nicole by their arms, hauling them toward the heavy iron doors that led to the holding cells. Nicole’s screams echoed down the marble hallway until the iron doors slammed shut with a deafening, final CLANG.

It was over.
