Chapter 4 - THE HOUSE OF CARDSThe color completely drained from Griffin’s face. “Leverage? What are you talking about?”

I turned my back on them for a moment, walking slowly toward the center of the polished dance floor. The entire ballroom watched my every movement, terrified to look away. Even the string quartet had quietly packed away their sheet music, standing by the corner in stunned silence.

“Alden Rowe built his empire on three pillars,” I said, projecting my voice calmly across the room. “High-end real estate development, defense-adjacent logistics contracts, and absolute, unquestioned political influence.”

I held up one finger.

“Pillar one: Real estate. Specifically, the St. Aurelia Hotel and the surrounding downtown commercial district. For thirty years, the Rowe Group has operated under massive federal zoning exemptions and expedited permits.”

I turned back to face my father, who looked like he had just been hit by a physical blow.

“Unfortunately for you, Alden, two weeks ago, a federal audit flagged severe zoning violations, illegal offshore shell companies, and systematic bribery of municipal inspectors tied directly to Rowe Enterprises’ flagship properties.”

Easton Bell shoved his way to the front of the crowd, his face purple with rage. “That’s impossible! The municipal board is in our pocket! We paid off the head of the zoning commission six months ago!”

The moment the words left Easton’s mouth, a heavy, suffocating silence slammed into the room.

Easton froze, his eyes widening in sheer terror as he realized what he had just admitted in front of three hundred elite witnesses, including two federal judges and a sitting senator.

I smiled—a cold, thin expression that didn’t reach my eyes.

“Thank you, Easton,” I said smoothly. “The FBI’s anti-corruption unit has been recording this entire ballroom on a closed-circuit feed. Every word you just spoke was logged, time-stamped, and cross-referenced with your corporate bank accounts.”

Griffin lunged forward, his face contorted in rage. “You set us up! You manipulated this entire wedding!”

“No, Griffin,” I said, my voice cutting through his panic like a scalpel. “You built a house of cards on a foundation of corruption, arrogance, and cruelty. I merely brought the wind.”
