Chapter 1 - The Shadow in the Doorway

The man standing in the grand entryway did not look like someone who knocked on doors. He stepped into the marble foyer wearing a bespoke obsidian suit, flanked by four tactical officers whose boots left heavy silences on the polished floor.

"Get your hands off my sister," Alexander Harrington said, his voice dropping the temperature of the room to absolute zero.

Santiago froze, his arm still raised above me. The glass of red wine in his mother’s hand shivered, spilling dark drops onto her silk gown. Santiago stared at the armed men, his arrogant mask slipping. "Who the hell are you? Do you know whose home this is?"

Alexander stepped forward, stepping directly between Santiago and where I lay on the floor. He didn't answer Santiago. Instead, he knelt beside me, his cold eyes softening for a fraction of a second as he checked my wrists and my breathing.

"You stayed away for two years, Clara," Alexander murmured, wrapping a cashmere coat around my trembling shoulders. "You said you wanted a normal life. Is this what normal looks like?"

Santiago’s face drained of color as the name hit him. Clara Harrington. The missing sole heiress to Harrington Global—the multi-trillion-dollar conglomerate that owned Santiago’s bank, his real estate firm, and the very ground his house was built on.

"Clara?" Santiago whispered, his voice cracking. "No. Your name is Clara Miller. You’re a fourth-grade teacher from Ohio."
