Chapter 5 - The Trap is Sprung

At 4:45 PM, Vance walked back into my hospital room. He looked entirely smug, pulling the sleek tablet from his briefcase and placing it on the table.
“Time is up, Chloe,” Vance said smoothly. “The jet is on the tarmac. Sign the trust agreement, and the first million will be deposited into Rosalie’s medical account by midnight. Let’s put this ugly chapter behind us.”
Kevin and I stood side-by-side at the foot of the bed. I had changed out of my hospital gown and into a pair of sweatpants and a loose shirt. I looked exhausted, but for the first time in days, my eyes were clear and sharp.
“We’re not signing it, Vance,” I said calmly.
Vance’s smile didn’t falter. It merely morphed into something cold and predatory. “Then you have chosen ruin. Your father has already filed the initial paperwork for a preemptive defamation suit. By tomorrow morning, the hospital will release a statement indicating that the ventilator line disconnect was an administrative error under review, completely unrelated to any outside visitors. Your mother’s medical records will show she was admitted to a psychiatric clinic hours before the incident occurred. You will have nothing.”
“Are you sure about that?” Kevin asked, stepping forward. He reached into his pocket and pulled out his phone, tapping the screen.
A video began to play. It wasn’t hospital surveillance. It was a crystal-clear, high-definition recording from a hidden nanny cam that Marsha had tucked inside the stuffed bunny Brooklyn had left beside Rosalie’s incubator.
The audio was pristine. It showed Eleanor walking in, looking directly at the camera’s hidden lens with a smirk, and deliberately slicing the oxygen line with a pair of medical shears she had stolen from a cart. It caught her voice, clear as a bell: “Let’s see how much attention you get when this little parasite stops breathing.”
Vance’s face turned an ashen, ghostly white. His hands began to shake as he stared at the screen. “Where... where did you get this?”
“And that’s not all,” I added, my voice echoing with absolute authority. “My sister Sarah just walked into the central police precinct twenty minutes ago. She handed over the original security logs from my father’s house, the text messages showing the conspiracy to bribe the hospital security guards, and the unaltered corporate ledgers showing exactly which offshore accounts were being used to pay off the witnesses.”
Vance scrambled to grab his briefcase, his professional demeanor entirely shattering. “This... this is an illegal ambush. This evidence won’t hold up in court!”
“It will hold up beautifully,” a new voice said from the doorway.
Two detectives from the major crimes unit stepped into the room, followed by the hospital's chief of security.
“Vance Miller,” the lead detective said, pulling out a pair of handcuffs. “You’re under arrest for conspiracy to obstruct justice, tampering with evidence, and bribery. And as for Richard and Eleanor Carter? Federal warrants have just been issued. The airport has grounded their private jet. They aren’t going to Switzerland. They’re going to a federal holding cell.”
Vance didn’t say a word as the steel cuffs clicked around his wrists. He was led down the hallway in silence, his career and his dynamic cover-up ruined in a matter of seconds.

As the door closed, I collapsed against Kevin, weeping tears of pure, unadulterated triumph. We had beaten them. The truth was out, and my mother would finally face the consequences of her malice.
But our battle was only half won. The ultimate test was still waiting for us inside the NICU pod.
