Chapter 18 - The Trust Revealed

The morning sun cast a pale winter light across the frost-covered windows of our Cambridge home. Though the federal trial was over and my father was locked away in a Vermont maximum-security prison, the shockwaves of his empire’s collapse were still vibrating through Boston's financial underground.
I sat at my heavy oak desk, sorting through an encrypted thumb drive that Miller had recovered from Henderson’s office safe. It contained more than just corporate ledgers; it held personal archives, digitized audio recordings, and legal documentation dating back decades.
"Julian?" Clara’s voice broke the silence of the study as she stepped inside carrying two cups of steaming black coffee. She set one down beside my laptop, her eyes tracing the tense lines of my shoulders. "You’ve been locked in here since 5:00 AM. What are you looking at?"
"My grandfather’s private journal, digitized," I murmured, clicking on a hidden folder labeled Voss-Vance Contingency. "My father always told me Grandfather left him absolute control of the estate because I was too soft. But I found the unredacted draft of the original 1998 trust document."
Clara leaned over my shoulder, her brow furrowing as she read the scrolling text on the screen. "What does it say?"
"It says my father didn't inherit the empire—he stole it," I whispered, a chill running down my spine. "Grandfather knew my father was ruthless and corrupt. He left the primary voting shares to me, but he also left a secondary trust meant to fund independent community development across Massachusetts, specifically managed by an independent board. My father buried that trust, forged Grandfather’s signature, and used those funds to launch the predatory real estate schemes that ruined hundreds of families—including yours, Clara."

Clara’s breath hitched. She placed her hand over mine, her skin warm and steadying. "That means... everything your family built was funded by stealing from the very people they pretended to protect."
"Yes," I said, a grim determination hardening in my chest. "And today, we’re going to give it all back."
