Chapter 2 — “The Mother Opened Her Eyes… Then Whispered One Name That Made the Bikers Go Silent”

The ambulance hadn't arrived yet.

Viper knelt beside the exhausted woman, checking her pulse with practiced hands.

"Weak," he muttered.

"But steady."

Mason carefully placed a bottle of water beside him while Tank stood facing the growing crowd. More neighbors had stepped outside now.

Not to help.

To watch.

Some filmed with their phones.

Others whispered behind folded arms.

"Who are they?"

"Probably scammers."

"The bikers know them?"

"I heard that woman was kicked out months ago."

"No wonder."

Rumors spread faster than compassion.

Ryder ignored every word.

His attention stayed on the woman beneath the maple tree.

"Ma'am?"

Her eyelids trembled.

Nothing.

He tried again.

"My name's Ryder. Your daughter is safe."

A long silence followed.

Then her lips moved.

Barely.

"M... Mira..."

The little girl instantly ran over.

"I'm here, Mommy!"

The woman's eyes slowly opened.

Clouded.

Exhausted.

Terrified.

The moment she realized Mira was standing beside four heavily tattooed bikers, panic flooded her face.

"No..."

She struggled to sit up.

"Please..."

Her voice cracked.

"Don't hurt her."

Mira threw her arms around her mother's neck.

"They're nice, Mommy."

"They bought us food!"

"They didn't even take my bike."

The woman stared at Ryder.

Confused.

People like him weren't supposed to exist.

Not according to everything life had taught her.

Tears rolled silently down her cheeks.

"I'm sorry," she whispered.

"I don't have anything left."

"You don't owe us anything," Ryder answered gently.

Viper handed her a small cup of water.

"Drink slowly."

She obeyed.

Her hands shook so violently that Ryder had to steady the cup.

For several minutes, nobody spoke.

Only after she finished drinking did Ryder quietly ask,

"What's your name?"

"...Emily."

"And what happened to you, Emily?"

Her face instantly changed.

The fear returned.

She looked toward the beautiful houses surrounding them.

Every window suddenly felt like another pair of eyes watching.

"I..."

She stopped.

"I can't."

Ryder noticed.

This wasn't embarrassment.

This was fear.

The kind that came from someone who believed telling the truth would make things worse.

"You don't have to say anything."

Emily nodded.

Relief mixed with guilt.

Across the street...

Inside the largest white house in Maple Ridge...

Richard Langford lowered the curtain just enough to keep watching.

Sweat covered his forehead.

His wife, Victoria, entered carrying a glass of iced tea.

"What are you staring at?"

Richard didn't answer.

Instead, he kept watching Ryder speak with Emily.

His breathing grew heavier.

Victoria looked outside.

"Oh."

"The homeless woman."

"I thought she finally left town."

Richard slowly whispered,

"She wasn't supposed to come back."

Victoria froze.

"What did you say?"

He realized his mistake immediately.

"Nothing."

But it was too late.

She had heard him.

Outside, the paramedics finally arrived.

After checking Emily, one medic frowned.

"She's severely malnourished."

"When was her last proper meal?"

Emily looked away.

"I don't remember."

The medic exchanged a worried glance with his partner.

"She needs observation."

Emily immediately shook her head.

"No hospital."

"You need treatment."

"I can't afford it."

Ryder stepped forward.

"I'll cover every bill."

Emily looked at him in disbelief.

"You don't even know me."

"No."

"But I know hunger."

Those four words hit harder than any speech.

Emily began crying again.

This time she didn't hide it.

While the ambulance prepared to leave, Mira tugged gently on Ryder's leather vest.

"Sir?"

"Yeah?"

She reached into her pocket.

"I forgot."

She unfolded a tiny piece of paper.

"I found this inside Mommy's backpack yesterday."

"It's why she cried all night."

Ryder accepted it.

The paper was badly folded.

Water-stained.

Almost torn apart.

At first glance it looked ordinary.

Then he saw the heading.

NOTICE OF PROPERTY TRANSFER

Below it...

A house address.

Emily's name.

A legal signature.

Another signature.

Stamped.

Approved.

Then one line caught his attention.

Transferred due to owner's voluntary agreement.

Ryder frowned.

He looked toward Emily.

"You signed this?"

Emily's face turned white.

"I never did."

Silence.

Even Tank stepped closer.

"What do you mean?"

"I never sold my house."

"I never signed anything."

"My signature was forged."

Every biker looked at each other.

Forgery.

Property theft.

This wasn't just a family tragedy anymore.

It was a crime.

Ryder flipped to the last page.

There, beneath several official stamps...

was the name of the law firm that handled the transfer.

Langford & Pierce Legal Group.

Across the street...

Richard Langford accidentally dropped his glass.

It shattered across his marble kitchen floor.

Because that document...

Was never supposed to leave his office.

And if Ryder started asking the right questions...
