Chapter 6 - THE POISONED EMPIRE

The corporate auditorium at the downtown Grand Hyatt was packed with over five hundred investors, journalists, and board members. Cameras flashed like lightning as the board of Erebus Holdings stood on stage, preparing to sign the final foreclosure and liquidation documents that would destroy Mercy Harbor Children's Hospital forever.
At the podium stood Richard Vance, Maya’s uncle—a slimy, silver-haired executive who had helped orchestrate her mother’s destruction decades ago.
"Ladies and gentlemen," Richard announced into the microphone, smiling crocodile tears for the news cameras. "It is with a heavy heart that we announce the immediate closure of Mercy Harbor. Due to insurmountable financial irregularities left behind by my late, tragic niece Julianna, the assets must be liquidated to satisfy international creditors—"
BANG!
The massive double doors at the back of the auditorium slammed open.
The flashbulbs instantly shifted focus.
Walking down the center aisle was Maya Bennett—or rather, Maya Vance. She wore a tailored black suit that draped over her tall, slender frame, her long brown hair styled with understated elegance. She walked with a slight cane due to her recovering hip, but her posture was regal, terrifying, and unbroken.
Beside her stepped Caleb Whitmore, flanked by four federal marshals and an army of corporate attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases.
"The liquidation is canceled, Richard," Maya’s voice echoed through the auditorium, clear and cold as winter glass.
A wave of gasps erupted through the crowd. Reporters rushed forward, cameras clicking feverishly.
"Who let this woman in here?" Richard snarled, his face turning red. "Security! Escort this janitor off the premises!"
"Touch her, and you'll be charged with federal treason," Caleb warned, stepping onto the stage and slamming a thick stack of certified court injunctions onto the podium. "As of 8:00 AM today, the Delaware Chancery Court verified the biological DNA sequence of Maya Vance-Bennett. She holds fifty-one percent of all voting stock in Vance Pharmaceuticals and absolute deed title to Mercy Harbor."
Richard stumbled back, grasping at his chest. "This... this is an outrage! She’s an illegitimate nobody! A mental patient raised in the hospital system!"
Maya stepped up to the microphone, pushing Richard aside with a cold glance. She looked directly into the primary news camera broadcasting live across the nation.
"Six years ago, I started cleaning floors at Mercy Harbor," Maya said, her voice commanding the total silence of the room. "I saw the corruption. I saw how human lives were reduced to line items on balance sheets. My mother died in those halls so men like you could buy yachts in Monaco."
She turned her gaze directly onto Richard.
"Effective immediately, I am firing the entire executive board of Vance Pharmaceuticals. I am freezing all off-shore accounts connected to Erebus Holdings. And I am opening a full criminal investigation into the systemic poisoning of pediatric patients at Mercy Harbor."
The room exploded into utter chaos. Reporters screamed questions, board members scrambled for the exits, and security guards stood frozen, unsure of who was actually paying their salaries anymore.
In the middle of the storm, Caleb leaned toward Maya, a faint, rare smile gracing his severe lips. "Impressive performance, CEO Vance."
"It's not a performance," Maya said, her eyes dark with suspicion as she looked out over the screaming crowd. "Look at the third row, Caleb."
Caleb’s eyes followed hers.

Sitting in the third row of the press section was a woman wearing a heavy dark hat and sunglasses. As Maya made eye contact with her, the woman slowly raised her hand, pressed a single finger to her lips, and slipped out the side emergency exit.
It was Julianna.
