Chapter 7 - NIGHT AT THE HARBOR

The storm over the city reached a deafening pitch by midnight. Thunder rattled the panoramic windows of the top-floor executive suite at Mercy Harbor.
The hospital was safe for now. The liquidation had been halted by court order, and fresh funding from Caleb’s private reserves had restored power and medical supplies to the pediatric wing. Down on the seventh floor, Noah was sleeping peacefully, guarded by six elite private contractors.
Maya stood alone in the dark CEO suite on the tenth floor, staring down at the city lights reflecting off the wet pavement below. She held an old, faded photograph she had found locked inside her mother’s secret file in the hospital archives. It showed Clara Bennett holding twin baby girls in her arms, smiling brightly despite the medical tubes attached to her chest.
"I’m going to fix this, Mom," Maya whispered into the dark room. "I promise."
The sound of a soft click echoed behind her.
Maya didn't flinch. She slowly turned around.
Standing near the private elevator was Julianna, holding a sleek matte-black firearm equipped with a suppressor. Her face was pale, scarred from the boat explosion, her eyes filled with an insane, frantic desperation.
"You always were the stubborn twin," Julianna sneered, stepping closer. "Even in the womb, you stole my nourishment. You took the pristine blood phenotype. You left me with broken genetics and a body that couldn't produce an heir!"
"You did this to yourself, Julianna," Maya said calmly, keeping her hands visible. "You turned your own son into a pawn for money."
"He is NOT my son!" Julianna shrieked, her hand shaking as she leveled the gun at Maya’s heart. "He was a business asset! And now that you've reclaimed the trust, I have nothing left. No money. No empire. No identity."
"Then drop the gun and end this," Maya pleaded gently, taking a slow step forward. "We can stop the cycle, Julianna. You’re my sister."
"Sister?" Julianna laughed hysterically, her finger tightening on the trigger. "We were never sisters, Maya. We were science experiments. And only one experiment gets to survive the night."
CLICK.
Julianna didn't fire. The shadow behind her moved faster than a striking viper.
Caleb stepped out from the darkness of the private office, his arm wrapping around Julianna’s neck while his hand clamped down on the gun’s slide, forcing the barrel toward the ceiling.
THWIP!
A single bullet shattered the overhead light fixture, showering the room in sparks.
Julianna fought like a cornered animal, biting and clawing, but Caleb disarmed her with practiced, military precision, slamming the gun onto the desk and pinning her against the wall.
"It’s over, Julianna," Caleb growled into her ear. "The police are in the lobby. The federal syndicate charges are already filed."
Julianna panted, her bloody face pressed against the cold glass window. But instead of crying or screaming, a slow, sickening smile spread across her face.
"You think you won, don't you?" Julianna wheezed, blood dripping from her lip onto the floor. "You think you saved the hospital... saved Noah... saved your little family?"
Maya stepped forward, a cold knot of dread twisting in her chest. "What did you do?"
May you like
Julianna’s laugh was raspy, horrific, and hollow.
"Look at the clock on the wall, Maya. It’s 11:59 PM. What did Caleb tell you earlier about the biological trust rules?"
