Chapter 9 - The New DawnThree days later, the glass headquarters of Ashton Ridge Solutions looked entirely different.

The heavy cloud of corporate anxiety that had choked the tenth floor on my first day had vanished, replaced by an electric energy of renewal. The board of directors had unanimously ousted Julian Vance, reinstated Claire Bennett as the permanent Chief Executive Officer, and launched a full internal restructuring of the supply chain division.

Marcus Vance was quietly escorted out of the building by federal agents on Tuesday afternoon after cooperating with prosecutors in exchange for a reduced sentence.

And me?

My desk was no longer in cubicle 4B.

A sleek, glass-walled corner office on the eleventh floor now bore a brand-new brass nameplate: Owen Carter – Vice President of Global Supply Chain Operations.

At precisely 8:45 AM, the private elevator chime pinged down the hall.

The door slid open, and Claire stepped out. She wore a charcoal blazer over a crisp cream blouse, her dark hair pinned back in that familiar, immaculate knot. But there was no shadow in her eyes today—only absolute, radiant authority.

She walked straight to my office door and tapped gently on the glass frame before pushing it open.

In her hand, she held a familiar white paper cup from the corner café.

“Morning, Mr. Carter,” she said with a faint, genuine smile that reached her eyes for the very first time.

“Morning, Ms. Bennett,” I replied, standing up from my new mahogany desk and adjusting my suit jacket. “Let me guess—your card worked at the register today?”

Claire chuckled, stepping inside and setting a fresh toasted bagel and coffee on my desk, right beside my father’s leather messenger bag.

“My card works anywhere I want it to, Owen,” she said softly, leaning against the glass partition and looking out over the panoramic view of the Chicago skyline. “Though I have to admit... eighteen dollars and seventy-four cents was the best investment this company ever made.”

“I told you there was no catch,” I smiled.

“I know,” she replied, her gaze locking onto mine with a warmth that felt like home. “Now stop standing around, VP Carter. We have an empire to rebuild.”
