Chapter 5 - THE MORNING AFTER THE STORMThe sun rose over Willow Creek, but inside Sterling Capital’s private penthouse suite, the light felt surgical and clinical.

Clare sat on a white leather sofa that cost more than her entire life’s earnings. Wrapped in a plush cashmere blanket, she held a steaming mug of black coffee with both hands, watching Evan sleep peacefully on a sprawling velvet daybed across the room. He was covered in a heavy down duvet, clutching a brand-new, oversized stuffed bear that a silent, smiling housekeeper had brought in an hour ago.
The door opened, and Harrison walked in, carrying a fresh dossier and a tablet. He had changed into a fresh charcoal suit, but the dark circles under his eyes remained.
“He’s sleeping like a rock,” Harrison said softly, sitting on the opposite end of the sofa, keeping a respectful distance. “The doctor checked him out. He’s healthy. Just exhausted from the cold.”
Clare didn’t look at him. She stared into the dark surface of her coffee.
“Why?” she whispered, her voice rough from crying.
Harrison paused. “Why what?”
“Why are you doing this, Mr. Sterling?” Clare finally turned her head, her brown eyes blazing with a mixture of terror and fierce pride. “You’re a billionaire. You own half the financial district. I’m just a woman who couldn't afford a bacon cheeseburger two nights ago. Why break into my apartment with private commandos? Why bring us here? What do you want from me?”
Harrison looked at her for a long, quiet moment. He didn't blink.
“Three years ago, my wife Ellena was killed in a car crash,” Harrison began, his voice dropping into a register so vulnerable it caught Clare completely off guard. “After she died, Sophie stopped talking to the world. She built a wall made of glass and silence. She didn't laugh for eighteen months. She didn't eat properly. She didn't look anyone in the eye.”
Harrison leaned forward, resting his elbows on his knees, his hands clasped tightly.
“When we were at that restaurant, Sophie watched you and Evan. She saw how hard you worked. She saw how much you loved him, even when you had nothing. And when she gave Evan her burger… she smiled for the first time in three years, Clare.”
Clare’s breath caught. She looked across the room at Evan sleeping soundly.
“You gave my daughter her humanity back,” Harrison said, his voice thick with unexpressed emotion. “And Julian Vane is trying to destroy your life because you won't let his corporate thugs steal your dignity. Do you really think I was going to sit back and let that happen?”
Before Clare could answer, the double doors of the penthouse burst open.
Victoria Sterling strode in, her face pale with fury, holding a tablet high in the air.

“Harrison! You need to see this right now!” Victoria barked, stopping dead in her tracks when she saw Clare. She glared at Clare with undisguised contempt before turning back to her brother. “Julian Vane just filed an emergency injunction. He’s seizing Marino’s Grill, freezing all employee back-pay, and—worst of all—he’s filed a court motion to strip Clare of her parental custody, claiming she’s an 'unfit, transient vagrant' living in squalor!”
Clare’s mug slipped from her fingers, shattering against the marble floor, dark coffee splashing across the pristine white rug.
