Chapter 7 - THE GHOST IN THE ARCHIVE“Your Honor! Permission to approach the bench with newly unsealed federal evidence!”

A breathless young paralegal sprinted down the aisle, clutching a thick, stamped brown envelope bearing the seal of the United States District Court.

Harrison Sterling walked calmly behind him, his expression cold as ice, flanked by two federal marshals.

Julian Vane leaped to his feet, his face turning the color of curdled milk. “Your Honor, this is completely out of order! This is a family court proceeding—!”

“Mr. Vane, shut your mouth or I will have the bailiff cuff you to the radiator,” Judge Cross ordered sharply. She gestured to the marshal. “Hand me the envelope.”

The judge sliced open the brown envelope with a silver letter opener, pulled out a stack of crisp, federal documents, and began to read.

As her eyes scanned the first page, the color completely drained from her face. She looked up slowly, her gaze sweeping past Harrison and landing directly on Julian Vane.

“Mr. Vane,” Judge Cross’s voice was barely a whisper, but it carried the terrifying weight of an avalanche. “Are you aware that these documents are signed federal indictments?”

Vane swallowed hard, his throat dry. “I—I don't know what you’re talking about, Your Honor—”

“These documents,” Judge Cross continued, reading directly from the paper, “detail a massive, multi-million-dollar conspiracy involving the systematic arson, illegal forced eviction, and fraudulent deed-stripping of over forty residential properties in the Willow Creek district—all executed by shell corporations directly owned and operated by Vane Global.”

The courtroom erupted into total chaos. Reporters shouted over one another, cameras flashing blindingly in Vane’s face.

Harrison didn’t look at Vane. He walked slowly past the defense table, stopped right beside Clare, and gently placed a reassuring hand on her shoulder.

“And,” Judge Cross raised her voice over the noise, banging her gavel three times, “attached to this federal indictment is a signed affidavit from the former Chief Financial Officer of Vane Global—who turned himself in to the FBI this morning—stating that the emergency custody petition against Clare Bennett was filed under explicit instructions from Julian Vane to silence her as the primary witness to his corporate crimes.”

Judge Cross slammed the gavel down one final time.

“The petition for emergency custody is dismissed with prejudice. Furthermore, based on imminent risk of flight and witness tampering, I am issuing an immediate bench warrant for the arrest of Julian Vane.”

Before Vane could turn around, two federal marshals stepped up behind him, grabbed his arms, and slapped cold steel handcuffs around his wrists.

As Vane was hauled out of the courtroom, kicking and screaming obscenities, the gallery fell into a stunned, reverent silence.

Clare sat back down in her chair, her knees suddenly weak, the adrenaline draining out of her body leaving her trembling from head to toe.

Harrison knelt beside her chair, looking up into her eyes.

“It’s over, Clare,” he said softly, a gentle, rare smile touching his lips. “You won.”
