Chapter 2 - Unveiling the Monster

The silence in the grand hall was deafening. The only sound was the distant crash of the waves against the cliffs outside. Diego stood frozen, his gaze locked onto the horrific map of scars etched into my skin.

“I told you,” I said softly, my voice devoid of emotion as I reached behind my back. My fingers, practiced and steady, began unbuttoning the long row of pearl fasteners that remained. “You didn't marry a princess, Diego. You married a survivor.”

With a smooth, deliberate motion, I let the heavy, five-figure silk gown drop to the floor. It pooled around my ankles like a discarded shroud, leaving me standing in the center of the cold marble room in nothing but a simple lace slip.

Without the armor of the dress, the full extent of my father’s cruelty was visible.

My arms were crisscrossed with thin, faded white lines from a thin leather belt. My left shoulder bore the faint, twisted distortion of a bone that had been broken and allowed to set poorly without medical attention. And on my ribs, right where the corset had been pressing, was the massive, dark burn mark from an iron—a punishment from the night I tried to run away when I was fourteen.

Diego took a step back, his face pale, his jaw clenched so hard the muscles jumped. The ruthless mafia don who had ordered the execution of dozens looked genuinely horrified.

“Arthur did this?” he asked, his voice shaking with a terrifying mixture of shock and rising fury.

“Arthur, Thomas, their enforcers,” I said, stepping out of the ruined wedding dress. “Whenever the business went wrong, whenever a shipment was lost to the Ramos family, my father took his frustrations out on the only thing in the house that couldn't fight back. Thomas watched. Sometimes he helped, just to keep the belt away from his own back.”

Diego’s breathing became ragged. He looked from my face to the scars, then back again. The narrative he had built over three years of bloody warfare—the burning desire to ruin Arthur Martin by destroying his beloved, sheltered daughter—crumbled into ash.

“He told the city you were his jewel,” Diego muttered, a dark, dangerous energy beginning to swirl around him. “He kept you hidden in that mansion, telling everyone you were too pure for the world.”

“He kept me hidden so the police wouldn't see the bruises,” I corrected coldly. “He kept me hidden so the world would buy the lie of the noble Martin family. Thomas offered me to you because he thought it would be the ultimate punishment for me. He thought you would finish the job they started.”

Diego stepped forward, his movements sudden and frantic. He grabbed my upper arms, his grip tight, but this time, he was careful to avoid the visible scar tissue. He forced me to look at him.

“Why didn't you say anything? At the altar. Before the wedding. Why didn't you run?”

“Run where, Diego?” I challenged, my eyes flashing with a spark of defiance. “To the police? My father owned the chief. To the other families? They would have handed me right back to secure an alliance. You were my only way out. Even if you killed me, it would have been quicker than what Thomas had planned for me.”

Diego stared at me, his chest heaving. The realization hit him like a physical blow: by demanding me as a bride, he hadn't stolen Arthur Martin’s treasure. He had unwittingly rescued Arthur Martin’s slave. He had paid for a hostage, but he had received a ghost.

Suddenly, his phone buzzed violently in his pocket.

Diego tore his eyes away from me, pulling the phone out. He answered it with a vicious glare. “What?”

I couldn't hear the voice on the other end, but Diego’s expression shifted from shock to pure, unadulterated malice. His eyes turned back to me, glowing with a dark, predatory light that sent a shiver down my spine.

“Say that again,” Diego commanded the caller. He listened for three seconds before slamming the phone shut.

He looked at me, a cruel, cold smile spreading across his face—but for the first time, that smile wasn't directed at me.

“It seems your brother Thomas just called a secret meeting with the remnants of the Corleoni family,” Diego said, his voice dropping to a deadly purr. “He’s telling them that he successfully planted a Trojan horse in my house. He thinks you’re going to poison my food tonight, Noelle. He thinks he used you to eliminate me.”

HOOK: Thomas thought he sacrificed his broken sister to kill the devil. He didn't realize he just gave the devil a reason to burn his entire world down.
