Chapter 1 - The First Knock

The metallic echo of the doorbell cut through the silence of my Chicago apartment like a serrated blade. On the television screen, the news anchor’s voice droned on, detailing the multi-million-dollar embezzlement scandal anchored to Bennett Senior Living. My cell phone was still warm against my ear, Allison’s panicked breathing hitching in the static-filled receiver.
"Natalie? Did you hear me?" Allison sobbed, her voice cracking as the sound of distant wailing filtered through her line. "The police... they just pulled up to the house. Blue and red lights are flashing across the living room windows. Dad is clutching his chest. What did you do?"
"I didn't do anything, Allison," I said, my voice eerily calm compared to the frantic hurricane raging across the state line. "I just stopped protecting a thief."
I pulled the phone away without waiting for her reply and walked slowly toward the front door. The heavy mahogany wood felt cold under my palm. Through the brass peephole, two silhouette figures stood under the hallway's harsh fluorescent light. One of them wore the dark tactical uniform of the Illinois State Police financial crimes unit; the other held a standard badge out, ready to press it against the glass.
My heart pounded a frantic rhythm against my ribs, but my mind was an ice-cold calculation. For nine months, Richard Bennett had treated my integrity like a disposable napkin. He had stripped me of my job, ostracized me from every family holiday, and meticulously forged a digital trail of breadcrumbs designed to drop a federal indictment squarely on my shoulders. He thought he was untouchable behind his wealth and political donations. He forgot that the controller of the company doesn't just look at the books—she writes the architecture of the escape plan.
I unlocked the deadbolt and pulled the door open.
"Natalie Bennett?" the lead detective asked, his tone professional yet guarded.

"Yes," I replied, stepping back to let the fluorescent light hit my face. "And I assume you’re here about the Nevada wire transfers?"
The detective blinked, momentarily thrown off balance by my lack of resistance. He lowered his badge slightly, pulled a thick sheaf of paperwork from his trench coat, and read the words that would tear my family—and my father's empire—apart at the seams.
