Chapter 2 - The Legal Vault’s Darkest SecretThe silver pendant felt like a burning ember in Alex’s hand. Twelve years. For twelve years, he had believed Valerie simply walked away from Peterson Tech after their quiet, intense affair ended. He had moved on, built a tech empire worth tens of millions, married Bridget, and raised Finn in luxury—while his own flesh and blood survived on stale bread and church soup.

Alex’s mind raced as he drove back to the towering glass monolith of Peterson Tech’s headquarters in downtown Sydney. He didn't use the main elevator. He used his executive keycard to access the basement archives—a climate-controlled vault containing three decades of physical legal records, non-disclosure agreements, and corporate buyouts.

His hands shook as he bypassed the digitised systems and unlocked the red-labeled cabinet marked CONFIDENTIAL / BOARD DECISIONS (2014).

"Looking for something, Alex?"

Alex spun around. Standing at the threshold of the archive room was Arthur Vance, the Chief Legal Officer and a man Alex had considered a mentor for over fifteen years. Arthur’s face was unreadable, his arms crossed over a crisp tailored suit.

"Arthur... what happened to Valerie Smith?" Alex demanded, his voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Why are her children sleeping on cardboard in Central Park?"

Arthur let out a soft, weary sigh and closed the heavy steel door behind him. "You shouldn't have dug into this, Alex. Some dead dogs are left buried for a reason."

"They're my sons!" Alex roared, slamming his fist against the metal cabinet. "Liam and Ethan! Born March 15th! I saw the pendant, Arthur! What did this company do?"

Arthur pulled a key from his pocket, unlocked a lower drawer that wasn't listed on the company index, and pulled out a thick, faded manila envelope tied with red string. He tossed it onto the metal table between them.

"You were young, brilliant, and about to take this company public," Arthur said coldly. "A secret affair with a junior analyst resulting in twins would have destroyed the IPO. The board couldn't let that happen. Your father couldn't let that happen."

Alex froze. "My father?"

"Your father paid Valerie two million dollars to leave the country and sign a non-disclosure agreement," Arthur revealed. "She took the money, left Sydney, and agreed to cut all ties. But six months later, she tried to return it. She was sick, Alex. Terminal cancer. She sent a letter pleading with the company to ensure you received her children if she didn't survive."

Alex opened the envelope with trembling fingers. Inside was a letter written in Valerie's delicate handwriting, addressed to him. Beneath it was a formal legal rejection stamped with Peterson Tech’s seal—and signed not just by his late father, but by Bridget Vance—his current wife, who happened to be Arthur Vance’s daughter.

Alex’s breath hitched. Bridget hadn't just married him; she had helped orchestrate the erasure of his firstborn children.
