Chapter 1 - The Manhattan Masquerade

The ballroom of The Grand Sterling glistened like an ice palace drowned in amber light, smelling faintly of expensive champagne, high-stakes panic, and illicit money. Anna stood near a towering arrangement of white orchids, nursing a sparkling water she had no intention of drinking. Her navy skirt had held up, but her nerves hadn't. For four years, she had been the invisible shield between Berto Castiano and the vultures of the New York underworld, but tonight, wearing a borrowed emerald dress that hugged her curves in ways she hadn't practiced, she felt utterly exposed.

"You look like a deer in front of a freight train," a voice murmured near her ear.

She didn't even have to turn to know it was Dominic Moretti, the younger brother of the Chicago syndicate's boss. Dominic was all slicked-back hair, designer stubble, and predatory charm. He had spent the last two hours trying to corner her with a persistence that made her skin crawl.

"And you look like a walking tax audit, Dominic," Anna replied, turning with a tight, practiced smile. "Please tell me you didn't corner me just to comment on my fauna-like state."

"I came to offer you a real job," Dominic leaned in, his cologne thick and cloying. "Berto treats you like a glorified filing cabinet. Come to Chicago. I’ll pay you triple, and you won't have to dodge bullets on a Tuesday."

Before Anna could formulate a scathing rebuttal, the temperature in the immediate vicinity plummeted. The ambient chatter of dozens of capos, lieutenants, and corrupt politicians seemed to die down in concentric circles.

Berto Castiano appeared behind Dominic like a phantom summoned by malice. He hadn't bothered with a tuxedo; his charcoal three-piece suit was tailored to weaponized perfection, his collar unbuttoned just enough to reveal the sharp line of his throat. His dark eyes locked onto Dominic with a cold, terrifying stillness that silenced the music in Anna's head.

"Is this how you have fun, Moretti?" Berto asked, his voice a low, gravelly purr that carried an unmistakable death threat. "Recruiting my staff at a charity event?"
