Chapter 7 - The AuditTwo weeks after the divorce, Daniel Mercer sat alone in his empty apartment.

The glass-walled living room, once a symbol of his elite status, now felt like a fishbowl in a sterile laboratory. Lauren had officially broken off all contact, blocking his number and returning his house keys via an intern. The partners at Mercer & Associates had placed him on an "indefinite leave of absence" pending an internal ethics review regarding his handling of the Mercer divorce assets.

In the corporate legal world, incompetence was a cardinal sin. But arrogance wrapped in self-sabotage was a death sentence.

Then came the final blow.

A messenger dropped an official envelope on his doorstep bearing the letterhead of the Internal Revenue Service.

Daniel tore it open with trembling fingers.

Notice of Federal Tax Audit.

Because he had legally declared the art portfolio’s total value at $1 in a public judicial settlement agreement, and because that same portfolio was subsequently appraised and sold on the open market for $48 million, the IRS was opening an immediate investigation into tax evasion, fraudulent asset concealment, and deliberate undervaluation of marital property to defraud state tax authorities.

The federal government wanted to know how a collection worth $48 million was legally transferred for a single dollar right before a major liquidity event.

Daniel dropped the letter onto the floor.

He realized then the true genius of Evelyn’s silence. She hadn't tricked the tax man; he had. He had signed his name to the fraud in black ink, thinking he was cheating her out of her dignity.

His phone rang. It was Marcus.

"Daniel," his attorney’s voice was devoid of any professional warmth. "The IRS audit is real. And to make matters worse... Evelyn’s legal team just filed a multi-million-dollar defamation and malicious prosecution countersuit against you for your public statements branding her work as valueless amateurism."

Daniel couldn't breathe. "Can we fight it?"

May you like

"Fight what, Daniel?" Marcus snapped. "You signed the confession with your own hand. I’m resigning as your counsel effective immediately. Good luck."

The line went dead.
