Chapter 15 - The New Cornerstone

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Asheville residential community took place on a crisp, brilliant autumn morning.

The site was surrounded by rolling green hills, majestic oak trees, and a clear blue sky that stretched out endlessly across the horizon. Investors, municipal leaders, local journalists, and our core engineering team gathered beneath a large white hospitality tent to watch the official commencement of construction.

Thomas Vance, managing partner of Horizon Capital, stepped up to the podium and took the microphone.

“For years, this region has looked for leadership that prioritizes substance over spectacle, engineering integrity over empty promises, and long-term vision over short-term greed,” Vance told the gathered crowd, his voice carrying clearly across the site. “Today, under the steady, brilliant guidance of Claire Rowan, Rowan & Associates sets a new standard for sustainable luxury architecture.”

Applause rippled through the crowd.

I stood near the edge of the stage, wearing a hard hat and a tailored safety vest, looking out over the massive tract of land where the first foundations were about to be poured.

Marcus walked up beside me, handing over the ceremonial silver shovel. “Everything is ready, Claire. The concrete trucks are lined up, the stress tests are verified, and the permits are locked in.”

“Thank you, Marcus,” I said, taking the shovel with a firm, confident grip.

As I walked out to the center of the freshly graded earth, I planted the tip of the shovel deep into the dark, rich North Carolina soil. I didn't think about Grant, or the disastrous night he tried to humiliate me in my own living room, or the crumbling ruins of a fraudulent past.

Those were just old debris cleared from the site.

I lifted a heavy spade of earth, turning it cleanly in the sunlight as cameras flashed around me. The foundation was set. The structure was sound. And the future was entirely mine to build.
