Chapter 2 - The Raid and the Unthinkable

The rain was pouring in sheets by the time three blacked-out SUVs pulled into the alley behind the old maritime shop. Ten heavily armed men stepped out, their faces obscured by tactical masks, their weapons held at the ready. Owen Cross stepped up next to Declan, his face grim.
"We have the perimeter secured," Owen whispered, his eyes scanning the rusted fire escapes. "Nobody gets out. Declan... are you sure about this? If we go in there guns blazing, she could get caught in the crossfire."
Declan checked the chamber of his custom matte-black pistol. His face was a mask of stone, but inside, a hurricane was raging. “Mrs. Mercer goes to see a different man every night.” The kid’s words rang like a death knell in his ears. Was Claire using his own empire, his own secrets, to feed information to the Maroni family? Was her love for him nothing but an elaborate, three-year-old setup?
"She won't get hurt," Declan said, his voice dangerously calm. "Because I'm going in first. You take the back door. Anyone who draws a weapon dies. Except the man she was with. Leave him alive for me."
Owen nodded once. "Go."
With a brutal kick from Declan’s heavy boot, the rusted iron door shrieked and gave way, slamming against the interior wall.
"Federal agents! Nobody move!" one of Declan's men shouted—a tactical lie designed to cause immediate confusion and prevent an instant gunfight.
The interior of the warehouse was a maze of old shipping crates, hanging plastic tarps, and rotting drywall. Declan moved through the space like a ghost, his gun raised, his eyes tracking the sudden shouts and panicked movements of men inside.
"What the hell?! Who is that—"
Before a guard could finish his sentence, Owen dropped him with a silent, heavy blow to the back of the neck. The efficiency of Declan's crew was terrifying. Within ninety seconds, four low-level Maroni lookouts were pinned to the filthy concrete floor, their hands zip-tied behind their backs.
Declan pushed past a heavy canvas tarp into what looked like an old foreman’s office at the back of the warehouse. A single lightbulb hung from a frayed cord, swaying gently, casting long, erratic shadows across the room.
He threw the door open, his gun raised, ready to kill the man who had stolen his wife's loyalty.
"Don't shoot! Please, don't shoot!"
The scream didn't come from Claire. It came from Rachel Dawson—the maid.
Declan froze. His eyes scanned the room, and the scene before him made his breath catch in his throat.
The room wasn't a lover’s hideaway. It was a makeshift, underground medical clinic.
There were three cot beds lined up against the wall. On one lay a young man with a heavily bandaged chest, an IV drip hooked up to a rusted clothing rack. On another sat the young, tattooed Maroni soldier Declan had seen at the door, holding a blood-soaked rag to a deep laceration on his forearm.
And in the center of the room stood Claire.
She was wearing a blood-stained medical apron, holding a suture needle in her trembling hand. She looked at Declan, her gray eyes wide with absolute terror—not the terror of a guilty wife caught in an affair, but the terror of a woman who realized her secret world had just collided with a monster.
"Declan?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "What... what are you doing here?"
Declan lowered his gun slightly, his mind reeling, trying to piece together the fragments of a reality that didn't make sense. He looked at Rachel, who was cowering in the corner, weeping into her hands. Then he looked back at Claire.
"Claire, what is this?" Declan demanded, his voice shaking with a mix of leftover adrenaline and sheer confusion. "Why are you here? With them?"
May you like
Before Claire could answer, the tattooed young man on the cot tried to stand up, snarling through his pain. "Get the hell away from her, Mercer! She’s got nothing to do with your port wars!"
"Shut up, Marcus!" Claire snapped, her professional authority flashing through her fear. She turned back to Declan, her eyes fierce, defying the small army of armed men standing in the hallway behind him. "They are my patients, Declan. And if you don't let me finish this stitch, this boy is going to bleed out on my floor."
