Chapter 16 - Winter’s Arrival

By November, the trees along Oakridge Lane had shed their autumn leaves, leaving bare, elegant branches against a pale winter sky.

The renovation of my downstairs apartment was officially complete. Thomas had done an exceptional job restoring the original woodwork, and my private sitting room looked out over a tidy, newly repaired backyard fence.

Clinton and Stephanie’s life had stabilized into a comfortable, modest rhythm in their two-room apartment over the Laundromat. They were saving a little money each month, paying down their remaining debts, and spending their weekends walking in the park with Mason rather than shopping for things they didn't need.

One evening, as a light dusting of snow began to settle on the front lawn of 442 Oakridge Lane, my phone buzzed on the coffee table.

It was a text message from Stephanie.

“Mom, can we come over for dinner on Friday? I’m making pot roast. Just a regular family dinner. No carts, no cards, no expectations.”

I smiled, picked up my phone, and typed back:

“I’ll put the kettle on for chamomile tea. See you at six.”

The storm that had threatened to destroy our family had finally passed, leaving behind something much stronger than quicksand: a foundation built on truth, respect, and unconditional reality.
