Chapter 1 - The Dark RevelationMy fingers trembled as I clutched the photograph Elias had handed me. The room around me—luxurious, sterile, smelling faintly of expensive cologne and old paper—suddenly felt entirely devoid of oxygen.

“What... what does this mean?” My voice was barely a whisper, a broken sound caught between terror and grief.

Elias Vance did not blink. His sharp, predatory gaze remained fixed on my face, reading every micro-expression, every tremor of my lips. The silver flecks in his dark eyes seemed to catch the cold light of the Manhattan dawn.

“It means, Ava, that your entire marriage was a meticulously constructed lie,” Elias said, his deep voice resonant and chillingly calm. “Victor Miller is not just a mid-level accountant or a minor corporate manager. He is a high-ranking sleeper agent planted inside the financial grid by my sworn enemy, Dante Moretti.”

My breath hitched. The name Moretti was spoken in the New York underworld like a death sentence. They were the old guard—vicious, unpredictable, and ruthless.

“But... but why me?” Tears stung my eyes, hot and bitter. “Why did he marry me? Why did he pretend to love me for three years?”

“Because of your bloodline,” Elias answered bluntly, standing up and walking toward the floor-to-ceiling window overlooking the snow-dusted skyline. “You are the great-granddaughter of Salvatore Rossi. The man who founded the city's old shipping syndicates and hid the ledger containing every corrupt politician, judge, and cop in the Tri-State area. When Rossi died, the ledger vanished. Everyone thought it was destroyed. But Moretti believed it was passed down through the female bloodline. To you, Ava.”

My mind spun. My grandfather had always told me stories of our family's past, but he swore we were clean. He swore the past was dead.

“And the twins?” I gasped, instinctively pulling my sleeping daughters tighter against my chest. “Are they...?”

“They aren't just your daughters,” Elias interrupted, turning back to face me with a deadly, humorless smirk. “They are the biological keys to unlocking Rossi’s biometric vault. Victor didn’t want a son to carry on his name. He wanted a son because boys couldn’t inherit the genetic signature required to open the vault. When you gave birth to twin girls, Victor realized two things: first, that he couldn't use them the way Moretti wanted immediately; and second, that you were entirely useless to his mission. So, he threw you into the freezing street to die, hoping the elements would erase his failure.”

A cold fury—sharp, sudden, and blinding—replaced the terror in my chest.

Victor hadn’t just abandoned us. He had sentenced us to a brutal, freezing death because we didn't fit into his master's sick chessboard.

“He’s going to come for them,” I whispered, looking down at my innocent, sleeping babies.

Elias walked over, stopped just inches away, and leaned down so his voice was a low, dangerous rumble.

“Let him try. Nobody touches anyone under my roof. Especially not my new obsession.”
