Chapter 5 - The Spider’s WebInside the reinforced bunker, the hum of the auxiliary generator provided a low, vibrating background noise to the absolute silence that had fallen over Dominic and Claire.

Dominic stood frozen in front of the bank of high-definition monitors, watching Ben Carver and Richard Vance walk side-by-side through the front doors of the mansion on camera four. They weren't moving like frantic intruders breaking into a compound; they walked with the casual, arrogant confidence of men who owned the keys to the kingdom.
"Ben," Dominic murmured, the name sounding like a physical blow. "Ten years. I pulled him out of the Baltimore docks when he was bleeding out from a knife fight. I trusted him with my life, with my home, with my son."
"Power and greed make people forget loyalty very quickly, Mr. Mercer," Claire said quietly, sinking into a leather desk chair to steady her shaking legs. She looked up at the screens. "They know we're in the house. They know we have the flash drive and the journal. How long before they figure out this panic room exists?"
Dominic turned away from the monitors, his expression hardening into an impenetrable mask of pure cold steel. He walked over to a secure wall safe, spun the digital dial, and pulled out a heavy tactical shotgun along with several spare boxes of 12-gauge shells.
"They won't figure it out," Dominic said, loading the weapon with a sharp, metallic clack-clack. "This bunker was built during the height of the harbor wars twenty years ago. The steel walls are three inches thick, reinforced with titanium plating. They could hit this room with an RPG and barely scratch the paint."
"Great," Claire said sarcastically. "So we're safe inside a very expensive titanium tomb. How does that help Emma? How does that help your son?"
Dominic stopped loading shells. His gray eyes locked onto hers. "Caleb isn't in the nursery."
Claire stood up so fast her chair screeched against the floor. "What?!"
"Sarah called my encrypted mobile line right before the power went out," Dominic said, his jaw clenching. "She realized the East Wing nursery was compromised when the security locks failed. She took Caleb and slipped through the staff tunnels to the guest lodge on the north side of the estate."
"Where my daughter is," Claire whispered, horror gripping her chest.
"Yes," Dominic said grimly. "Which means Richard and Ben aren't just hunting us. They're hunting the children."
Claire looked around the panic room frantically. "There has to be another way out. A tunnel? A drainage pipe?"
"There's an emergency egress tunnel that leads half a mile down the hill into the old boathouse by the reservoir," Dominic said, walking over to a heavy steel floor grate in the corner of the bunker and lifting it. A damp, concrete ladder led down into pitch-black darkness. "It's our only way out without walking right into their crosshairs."
Claire didn't hesitate for a single second. When it came to her daughter, fear took a back seat to absolute maternal fury. She stepped up to the edge of the open grate and looked down into the dark abyss.
"Lead the way, Mr. Mercer," Claire said, her voice steady. "If anyone touches my little girl, I don't care how many guns they have, I'll tear them apart with my bare hands."

Dominic looked at her—this broke single mother from Dundalk who had stood up to him in a high-end restaurant and now stared down a dark escape tunnel with the courage of a seasoned soldier—and for the first time that night, a genuine, grim smile touched the corner of his mouth.
"After you, Claire," Dominic said softly, handing her a tactical flashlight. "Let's go get our children."
