Chapter 3 - The Siege of Iron and Ash

The glass facade of the south wing shattered into a million glittering deadly needles.
Flashbang grenades detonated inside the corridor with blinding white light and deafening CRACK-CRACK-CRACKS that rattled the teeth in Dominic’s jaw. He shoved Mara behind a reinforced titanium pillar, shielding her body with his own as high-velocity 5.56mm rounds tore through the drywall, shredding million-dollar paintings and marble statues into dust.
Through the white smoke stepped five operators clad in unmarked, matte-black tactical armor. Their helmets were smooth, void of human features, lit only by the green glow of quad-nod night-vision devices. They moved with the terrifying, mechanical precision of elite mercenaries.
"Target alpha is the girl! Non-lethal on the child, neutralize the asset!" the lead operator barked through a voice modulator.
He didn't see the shadow detach itself from the darkness behind him.
Umbral didn't bark. He didn't growl. A hundred and forty pounds of muscle and bone collided with the lead operator at forty miles an hour. The sound of ribs snapping was audible even over the roar of suppressed rifle fire. The operator went down hard, his weapon spinning across the slick floor as Umbral’s jaws clamped around his tactical collar, thrashing with sickening force.
"Target the canine! Target the—" another operator screamed, swinging his rifle down.
Dominic stepped out from behind the pillar and fired three quick rounds point-blank into the operator’s chest plate. The kinetic impact threw the mercenary back into the smoke, his body crashing through a display case.
"Mara! Move!" Dominic roared, grabbing her collar and dragging her down the service stairwell as DeMarco’s security team laid down a wall of suppression fire from the upper balcony.
The estate had turned into a slaughterhouse.
For ten years, Dominic Vasquez had built his fortune as an untouchable titan of high finance, believing his wealth was an unassailable fortress. But as he sprinted through the subterranean service tunnels beneath his mansion, hearing the distant detonations of breaching charges demolishing his home, he realized the terrifying reality: wealth was nothing compared to the raw, visceral violence of men who believed they owned the world.
They reached the armored vault located three levels below the basement—a subterranean bunker designed to withstand a nuclear blast.
Dominic shoved Mara inside, his breathing heavy, his shirt torn and soaked in blood and sweat. Umbral bounded in right behind her, his muzzle dripping with crimson, his flanks heaving.
"Stay here," Dominic panted, punching a twenty-character passcode into the vault door's digital keypad. "The door is eight inches of solid reinforced tungsten. Once it seals, nothing short of a bunker-buster missile can open it."
"No!" Mara cried out, reaching for his sleeve. "Don't leave us! They’ll kill you!"
"They can try," Dominic said, a terrible, grim smile touching his lips. "I spent my whole life building an empire of glass, little girl. It’s time I showed these bastards what happens when it breaks."
He went to pull the heavy lever to seal the vault from the outside, but Mara grabbed his hand with her tiny, frost-bitten fingers.
"Wait!" she gasped, reaching into the pocket of her ragged trousers. She pulled out a small, tarnished silver key suspended on a thin leather string. "My mother told me... if I ever found Umbral and a man who didn't run from him, I had to give him this."
Dominic stared at the key. It was an antique, mechanical key—completely useless against electronic locks, yet intricately carved with the crest of the European Central Bank’s private vault network.
"What does this open, Mara?"
"It doesn't open a door," Mara whispered, her eyes dark with a terrifying weight. "Mama said it opens the ghost."
Before Dominic could ask what she meant, a heavy detonation shook the ceiling of the tunnel. Dust poured down like gray snow. The heavy steel doors at the end of the corridor were being melted through with thermite charges. White-hot sparks rained onto the concrete.
Dominic slammed the manual override handle down.
"Lock it!" Dominic screamed at the heavy hydraulic system.
The massive tungsten vault door slid shut with a deep, echoing THUD, sealing Mara and Umbral inside the dark, indestructible core of the earth.
Dominic turned around, stepping away from the vault. He wiped the blood from his brow, racked the slide of his pistol, and stood alone in the dark corridor, waiting for the thermite to burn through the door.
Through the melting steel stepped a tall man wearing a tailor-made coat over a tactical vest. He carried no weapon, only an ivory-topped walking cane. His hair was silver, his eyes cold and lifeless as a shark’s.
It was Colonel Richard Vance.
"Dominic," Vance said, his voice smooth, echoing through the smoke. "You’ve made a terrible investment. Hand over my grand-daughter and the dog, and I might leave you enough money to buy a nice tombstone."

Dominic raised his gun, pointing it straight between the Colonel’s eyes.
"You're in my house, Vance," Dominic said quietly. "And you forgot to check the deed."
