Chapter 4 - The Ghost in the Ledger

Colonel Vance didn't flinch at the sight of the heavy pistol aimed at his head. He merely smiled—a thin, lifeless stretching of skin across bone—and tapped his ivory cane against the blood-stained concrete floor.

Behind him, four heavily armed mercenaries raised their rifles, laser sights locking onto Dominic’s chest.

"A deed?" Vance chuckled dryly. "Dominic, you’re an accountant with a fancy coat. You buy distressed assets and flip them to the highest bidder. You don't understand the machinery that actually runs this world. You think you bought a dog; you think you’re protecting a child. You don't even realize you’re holding the ignition key to a global economic collapse."

"Try me," Dominic said, his finger tightening on the trigger.

"The girl," Vance said, taking a step forward, completely unbothered by the gun pointed at his face, "is not my granddaughter by blood. She was created in a laboratory in Geneva, funded by a consortium of three sovereign wealth funds. Her DNA carries the master cryptographic key to the 'Ghost Ledger'—a shadow banking network containing forty trillion dollars of unmapped, untaxed asset transfers."

Dominic’s eyes narrowed slightly. "And my dog?"

"Umbral was designed to be the biological keycard," Vance explained smoothly. "The dog's olfactory system was modified to recognize a specific synthetic pheromone produced only by Mara’s sweat glands. When the dog touches her skin, its internal microchip compiles the two halves of the key and broadcasts it to the satellite. But you destroyed the collar."

"I saved the animal's life," Dominic corrected coldly.

"You delayed the inevitable," Vance sneered. "Now, stand aside and open that vault, or I will have my men burn this entire property to the ground with thermite until the concrete melts into glass."

Dominic looked at Vance, then let out a slow, dark laugh that echoed through the subterranean vault.

"You really don't know who I am, do you, Vance?" Dominic whispered.

"I know exactly who you are. Dominic Vasquez. Net worth twelve billion dollars. Born in a slum in Madrid, climbed your way up through corporate espionage."

"Then you missed the part where I got my starting capital," Dominic said.

Before Vance could react, Dominic pulled the silver antique key Mara had given him from his pocket and jammed it directly into a small, unmapped, purely mechanical slot hidden behind a junction box on the vault wall.

He turned the key ninety degrees.

A sharp, mechanical CLICK echoed through the walls of the entire complex.

It wasn't a lock. It was a physical circuit-breaker override for the regional power grid.

Instantly, every emergency light in the facility died, plunging the tunnel into pitch-black darkness. Simultaneously, high-intensity emergency fire-suppression sprinklers activated, pouring thousands of gallons of high-density fluorocarbon foam into the hallway.

The foam reacted instantly with the mercenaries' night-vision systems, blinding them with absolute white-out glare.

"FIRE!" Vance screamed, his calm demeanor vanishing into wild panic.

Muzzle flashes erupted in the pitch darkness, lighting up the tunnel like a strobe light. Bullets pinged harmlessly off the tungsten vault doors and reinforced walls.

Through the chaos and blinding white foam, a shadow moved.

Dominic didn't fire his weapon. He knew the layout of his own bunker blindfolded. He moved like a ghost, grabbing the first mercenary by the tactical vest, slamming his head into the concrete wall, and stripping his high-explosive flash-grenades from his belt.

Dominic pulled the pin on two grenades simultaneously and dropped them into the enclosed space.

BOOM! BOOM!

The pressure wave knocked Vance off his feet, shattering his ivory cane. The remaining mercenaries collapsed, disoriented, blood streaming from their ears as the concussive force bounced violently off the confined concrete walls.

When the smoke cleared slightly and the backup battery lights flickered on, Vance was crawling on his hands and knees through the toxic foam, coughing violently.

Dominic stood over him, holding a heavy tactical combat knife he had stripped from one of the downed guards.

"You thought I was an accountant, Vance," Dominic said, kneeling beside the bleeding Colonel and seizing him by the hair. "An accountant just counts the money. I’m the guy who buries the bodies when the money goes missing."

"You... you can't kill me," Vance wheezed, blood spitting from his lips onto Dominic’s boots. "The orbital satellite... if my bio-monitor dies... an automated signal will trigger a full wipe of every bank account associated with the Vasquez name. You'll be a beggar by morning."

Dominic leaned in close, his gray eyes burning with a terrifying, unholy light.

"I was born in a slum, Vance," Dominic whispered into his ear. "I know how to be poor. Do you?"

Dominic raised the knife—but before he could strike, a heavy, metallic groan echoed behind them.

The tungsten vault door was opening from the inside.
