Chapter 3 - SHADOWS OF THE ESTATEThe room went dead silent. Even the rain outside seemed to quiet down.

Judith didn't scream. She didn't cry. She simply turned her head slowly to look at the doorway, where Graham was standing between two officers, his face completely drained of color.
"Graham..." Judith whispered, her voice dropping its haughty tone for the first time. "What did you do?"
Graham couldn't meet her eyes. Tears were streaming down his cheeks, mixing with the red mark on his jaw where he had cut himself shaving that morning. "I couldn't let her die, Mom," he sobbed. "I loved dad, and you killed him! And then I saw Nora getting sicker and sicker every week... I saw the way you looked at her when she drank the tea you made!"
Graham was the anonymous tip.
My mind struggled to piece it together. The man who had begged me to keep quiet at the registration desk, the man who had tried to cover up his mother's cruelty for months... was the one who had finally broken the cycle.
"You idiot," Judith hissed, her voice dripping with pure venom. "You sniveling, weak-willed idiot! Everything I built was for you!"
"You didn't build anything!" Graham shouted, stepping into the room as the officers tried to hold him back. "You stole Dad's fortune, you poisoned him over five years, and when Nora started asking questions about the offshore accounts in Dad's will, you started putting the same powder in her food!"
Detective Miller stepped forward and grabbed Judith's wrists, snapping the handcuffs tightly around her frail-looking wrists. "Judith Vance, you are under arrest for attempted murder, aggravated assault, and first-degree murder in the death of Arthur Vance."
As the officers began leading Judith away, she paused right next to my bed. Her cold, dark eyes locked onto mine with terrifying intensity.
"You think you won, Nora?" she whispered, a sickening smile playing on her lips. "Check your phone. Look at the trust agreement you signed last month when you thought you were signing medical insurance papers. If I go to prison... everything goes to the estate foundation. And who do you think owns the foundation?"
She was dragged out into the hallway before I could answer, her laughter echoing down the sterile corridor.
I pulled my phone off the bedside tray with trembling fingers. My hands shook so violently I nearly dropped it. I opened my email and searched for the documents I had digital-signed weeks ago during one of my heavy "migraine" episodes.
There it was. A legal assignment of assets.
If Judith Vance was convicted of a felony, her entire forty-million-dollar estate wouldn't go to Graham. It wouldn't go to the state. It was set to automatically transfer into a private blind trust registered in the Cayman Islands.

And the sole trustee named on the second page wasn't Judith.
It was Dr. Evan Mercer.
