Chapter 8 - The Fifty-Fifth FloorThe marble lobby of the Lancaster Tower was dead silent at eight-thirty on a Friday morning.

The security guards at the front desk didn't look up as Ethan walked through the revolving glass doors, holding the hand of a ten-year-old girl in an oversized white bathrobe and a pair of clean, oversized sneakers Ethan had bought at an all-night boutique across town. They didn't dare look up. The word had already filtered down through the executive channels: Mr. Lancaster is back, and he is not taking meetings.

They rode the private executive elevator straight to the fifty-fifth floor in absolute silence. The digital floor indicator ticked upward—38, 45, 52, 55—the numbers glowing a sharp, clinical amber against the dark wood paneling of the car.

Ping.

The doors slid open to reveal the grand boardroom: a vast, cathedral-like space of glass, chrome, and polished walnut, surrounded by panoramic views of the city skyline half-hidden behind a wall of morning mist.

Seated around the massive mahogany conference table were the seven members of the executive board, alongside Julian Vance himself. Julian looked immaculate in a bespoke charcoal-gray suit, silver hair brushed back from a high forehead, his thin lips curved into a polite, untouchable smile as he leaned back in his leather chair.

“Ethan,” Julian said smoothly, rising to his feet as the glass doors clicked shut behind them. “We were beginning to wonder if you’d survived the unfortunate gas leak at your historic property last night. Tragic business, old houses. So unpredictable.”

Ethan didn't answer immediately. He walked slowly into the center of the room, still holding Laya’s hand, stopping ten feet away from the head of the table.

“Julian,” Ethan said, his voice carrying across the cavernous room with the chilling clarity of a falling blade. “You always did have a terrible taste in architecture. You never could build anything that lasted.”

Julian’s polite smile didn't waver, but his eyes hardened into chips of slate as he glanced down at the small girl standing beside Ethan. A flicker of genuine shock crossed his face before he quickly masked it behind an amused chuckle.

“Ah,” Julian murmured, spreading his hands. “I see you’ve adopted a stray from the gutter. How charitable of you, Ethan. Though I must say, bringing a beggar into a board meeting of the Lancaster Group is a rather dramatic breach of protocol.”

“She’s not a stray, Julian,” Ethan said, his voice dropping an octave as he reached down and unbuttoned the top collar of his shirt, exposing the jagged scar on his neck. Then, he gently reached down and lifted Laya’s left wrist, letting the silver anniversary bracelet catch the morning light streaming through the glass wall. “She’s a Lancaster. Which means she owns fifty-one percent of everything in this room.”

The board members began to murmur anxiously, shifting in their leather chairs, looking between Julian and Ethan with growing alarm.

Julian’s face went completely bloodless. For the first time, the polished billionaire veneer cracked, revealing the cold, desperate predator beneath.

“You have no proof of anything, Ethan,” Julian hissed, stepping forward from the head of the table. “The girl is a nobody. A street urchin found in the dirt. The board will never recognize—"

“The board doesn't have a choice,” a crisp, mechanical voice interrupted from the wall-mounted multimedia display behind the conference table.

The large screen flickered to life, bypassing the corporate presentation software entirely. A live-feed video stream appeared, showing the interior of a high-security biomedical laboratory deep in the Pacific Northwest—the very facility Julian had used for his illegal cellular trials.

Federal marshals, accompanied by heavily armed tactical units, were systematically cuffing lab technicians, seizing hard drives, and carting away rows of crygenic storage cylinders containing the stolen genetic material of the Lancaster lineage.

Julian spun around, staring at the screen in absolute horror. “What... what is this?”

“That,” Ethan said, stepping forward until he was standing inches from Julian’s face, “is the sound of an empire falling.”
