Chapter 1 - The Unraveling of Ethan WalkerEthan watched Clare’s hand rest calmly on the white linen tablecloth, completely unbothered by the heavy legal document bearing her fate. There were no tears, no dramatic gasps, and certainly no begging. Just that infuriating, serene stillness that had grated on his nerves for the past three years.

"You were never anything but a placeholder, Clare—a poor man’s wife for a life I no longer intend to live," Ethan said, raising his voice just enough to catch the attention of a nearby table of venture capitalists. He wanted them to see him cutting ties, shedding the last remaining anchor of his humble past to make room for his new high-society fiancée, Vanessa Vance.
Clare finally looked down at the cream-colored envelope. She didn't open it. Instead, she picked up her glass of water, took a slow sip, and met his eyes with a terrifying clarity.
"You think you've outgrown me, Ethan," she said softly, her voice carrying a calm weight that sent an uninvited shiver down his spine. "You think Walker Innovations is soaring because of your late-night strategy meetings and your custom tailored suits. But you've forgotten something fundamental."
"And what would that be?" Ethan scoffed, signaling the waiter for the bill. "A reminder of my humble beginnings? I built this company from a laptop in our cramped kitchen."

"You built the shell," Clare corrected, sliding the envelope back across the table toward him without breaking eye contact. "I provided the foundation. And a foundation, Ethan, can be pulled out from beneath your feet faster than you can say acquisition."
With that, she stood up, grabbed her faded brown leather handbag, and walked out of the restaurant into the Manhattan rain, leaving Ethan sitting alone with a bill he suddenly wasn't entirely sure he could afford.
