Chapter 7 - THE MOUNTAIN OF SHADOWSThe storm raged violently as the medical helicopter sliced through the torrential rain, its spotlight cutting through the darkness toward the jagged peaks of the Blackwood Ridge. Below lay the Vance family’s private retreat—a sprawling, glass-and-stone mansion perched on the edge of a three-hundred-foot cliff.

The helicopter hovered over the helipad, and Ethan, Ava, and Detective Reyes disembarked into the howling wind.

The estate was completely dark, saved for a single flickering light emanating from the underground bunker level.

Ethan led the way, his gun raised, with Reyes covering their rear and Ava walking between them, using a lightweight tactical cane Reyes had provided.

They moved through the silent, cold corridors of the mansion. The air smelled of burnt wires and gasoline.

Down in the subterranean server room, the heavy steel doors were wide open. Inside, surrounded by rows of blinking mainframe computers, sat Margaret Vance.

She looked transformed. The elegant, refined socialite was gone. Her hair was disheveled, her silk dress stained with mud and blood from the transport crash. She was sitting at a master terminal, her fingers flying across the keyboard, a large digital countdown timer glowing red on the main screen: 04:59... 04:58... 04:57.

"Mother," Ethan’s voice boomed through the reinforced chamber.

Margaret didn't stop typing. "You should have stayed in the hospital, Ethan," she said, her voice eerily calm, devoid of any maternal warmth. "You were always too sentimental. If you had just let me sign those papers, Ava would have lived comfortably in an institution, you would have inherited a global empire, and our family legacy would have remained untarnished."

"You murdered my father!" Ethan screamed, stepping into the room, his gun aimed directly at her chest. "You murdered Ava’s father! You poisoned the woman I love for two years!"

Margaret finally stopped typing and turned her chair around. She looked at Ethan, then at Ava, her lips curling into a horrific, contemptuous smile.

"I built this empire!" Margaret spat, her voice echoing off the concrete walls. "Your father was a coward, Ethan! He was going to give everything away to the authorities because of a 'moral awakening'! And Arthur Pendelton was going to ruin us! I did what was necessary to survive! A mother protects her family's dominance at ANY cost!"

"You didn't protect us! You destroyed us!" Ethan shouted, tears mixing with the rain on his face. "Shut down the broadcast, Margaret! It's over!"

"It's never over," Margaret whispered chillingly. She reached beneath the desk and pulled out a heavy detonator switch.

Detective Reyes raised his weapon. "Drop the detonator, Margaret!"

"This server isn't just uploading the files to every major news network in the world, Ethan," Margaret said, her eyes wild with complete madness. "It’s connected to five hundred pounds of commercial explosives planted in the structural pillars of this mansion. In four minutes, the files will go live, framing you as the mastermind behind the entire operation... and this entire mountain top will crumble into the ravine below."

"You're insane," Ava gasped. "You're going to kill yourself?!"

"If I am going to hell," Margaret grinned, her fingers hovering over the big red button on the detonator, "I am taking the Vance legacy down with me!"
