Chapter 4 - THE BRIDE’S ULTIMATUM

The silence in the study was absolute.
Caroline’s chest heaved beneath layers of imported silk and lace. The pristine, elegant facade she had carefully maintained for the society columns had completely cracked, revealing the ruthless ambition underneath.
"Ethan," she demanded, stepping further into the room and ignoring Eleanor’s warning gesture. "Look at me. Are those children outside actually yours?"
Ethan couldn't speak. He looked like a trapped animal, glancing between Caroline’s powerful family connections and the undeniable biological reality of the three boys downstairs.
"Yes, they are," I answered smoothly, stepping forward to bridge the distance. "Three boys. Healthy, brilliant, and legally holding a stronger claim to this estate than anyone standing in this room."
Caroline let out a sharp, hysterical laugh. "You think a couple of stray brats from some nobody mother can disrupt a multi-million-dollar merger? My father owns half the district court judges in this state. By Monday morning, we can file injunctions, contest paternity, and drag you through courts until you're bankrupt."
"Try it," a calm, deep voice echoed from the doorway.
We all turned. Standing in the entrance was Marcus Vance—my chief legal counsel and managing partner of Vance Global, who had quietly arrived via helicopter behind our SUV. He adjusted his cufflinks, stepping into the room with an aura of absolute authority that made Caroline’s father look like a regional magistrate.
"Ms. Hastings," Marcus said smoothly, flashing a razor-sharp smile. "I wouldn't threaten litigation quite so casually. Vance Global has spent the last six months auditing every single financial asset held by Senator Hastings. Shall we discuss the offshore accounts currently under federal investigation, or would you prefer to talk about the securities fraud charges we’re filing on Tuesday?"
Caroline’s face went pale. "You’re bluffing."
Marcus pulled a sleek tablet from his briefcase and turned the screen toward her. One glance was all it took. Caroline staggered back, catching herself against the edge of the mahogany desk.
"You're ruined," I whispered, walking slowly toward her. "You thought you were inviting a broken, penniless ex-wife to your wedding to watch me squirm. You didn't realize you were walking into a trap that had been set the moment you tried to destroy my life five years ago."
Eleanor rushed forward, grabbing my arm with trembling fingers. "Victoria... please. We can negotiate. We can share the trust—"
"Save it, Eleanor," I pulled my arm away with a cold smile. "The time for negotiating was five years ago, when I was begging for enough dignity to raise my children in peace. Now? I don't want a piece of your empire."
"Then what do you want?" Ethan choked out, tears finally spilling over his lashes. "Victoria, please... let me be a father to my sons."
I turned back to look at my ex-husband—the man who had traded his family for status, only to lose everything in a single afternoon.

"You want to be a father, Ethan?" I said quietly. "Then pack your bags, leave this estate, and start figuring out how to explain to Liam, Noah, and Caleb why their father spent five years pretending they didn't exist."
Before he could answer, a loud commotion erupted from the hallway outside.
