Chapter 5 - The Glass House

The courtroom was suffocatingly quiet.

Judge Donald Harris sat high on his bench, his gray hair and stern expression radiating authority. To my right sat Andrew, dressed in a tailored navy suit, looking like the picture-perfect, grieving father. Beside him was his father, Richard, who gave Judge Harris a subtle, knowing nod as we sat down. Evelyn sat in the front row of the gallery, her face triumphant.

My attorney, Clara, squeezed my hand under the table.

"Your Honor," Andrew's high-priced attorney, Gregory Vance (no relation to Dr. Vance), began, standing up and smoothing his tie. "This is a tragic case of a young mother suffering from severe postpartum mental instability. Mrs. Monroe has launched a vicious, calculated social media smear campaign against her husband, a respected financial analyst, solely to destroy his reputation. She is refusing him access to his newborn son and is living in a cramped, unstable environment. We ask for immediate, temporary sole custody of Leo Monroe for the child's safety."

Judge Harris looked down at me, his eyes cold. "Mrs. Monroe, these social media posts are highly troubling. Family matters should be kept private. Do you have any evidence to support your claims that your husband intentionally abandoned you during a medical emergency?"

Clara stood up. "Your Honor, we have the 911 dispatch logs proving my client was left entirely alone, as well as medical records detailing her emergency roadside delivery. Furthermore, we have text messages from Mr. Monroe showing a complete disregard for his wife's physical safety."

"Those are mere communication breakdowns, Your Honor," Gregory Vance argued smoothly. "Mr. Monroe believed, in good faith, that it was a false alarm. As soon as he realized the severity, he drove back. This does not warrant a public execution of his character."

Judge Harris nodded slowly. "I am inclined to agree. While the circumstances of the birth are unfortunate, they do not prove ongoing neglect or unfitness as a father. I am very concerned about the mother’s willingness to use her child as a weapon on social media."

I felt my heart stop. He was going to give Andrew the baby.

"Your Honor, if I may," Clara said, her voice ringing out clearly. She opened a secondary folder she had kept hidden under her desk. "We have a witness we would like to call. Someone who can speak directly to Mr. Monroe’s character, his financial stability, and his true motives for this sudden rush for custody."

Andrew's lawyer frowned. "Your Honor, this is an emergency custody hearing, not a full trial. This is highly irregular."

"I will allow it, but keep it brief, Counselor," Judge Harris sighed.

"We call Chelsea Albright to the stand," Clara announced.

At the name, Andrew’s face didn't just go pale—it went completely gray. He whipped his head around to look at his mother, whose triumphant smile instantly vanished.

The double doors at the back of the courtroom opened. A young, elegant woman in her late twenties walked in. She was wearing a professional gray pantsuit, but what caught everyone's attention was her silhouette.

She was visibly pregnant. Approximately six months along.

She walked to the stand, took the oath, and sat down, her eyes avoiding Andrew entirely.

"State your name and relationship to the plaintiff," Clara said.

"My name is Chelsea Albright," she said, her voice trembling slightly but growing stronger. "I am a senior associate at the financial firm where Andrew Monroe is employed. And I am currently twenty-four weeks pregnant with Andrew Monroe's child."

A collective gasp echoed through the gallery. Evelyn stood up, her face twisted in rage. "This is a lie! This is a cheap setup!"

"Order! Order in the court!" Judge Harris banged his gavel furiously. "Mrs. Monroe, sit down or you will be removed!"

"Ms. Albright," Clara continued, ignoring the chaos. "Could you please explain the nature of your relationship with Mr. Monroe over the past year?"

"Andrew and I have been having an affair for fourteen months," Chelsea said, her voice echoing in the silent room. "He told me he was divorcing Rachel as soon as she gave birth. He said he needed to stay with her just long enough to secure his inheritance from his parents, who insisted on a 'stable family image' for his promotion."

I sat frozen. I knew things had been cold between us, but I had never suspected this. The piece of my heart that still held a shred of grief for my broken marriage instantly turned to ash.

"And why are you testifying today, Ms. Albright?" Clara asked.

Chelsea looked at me, a deep, genuine remorse in her eyes. "Because when I saw Rachel’s post... when I realized he had left her alone in a car to give birth while he was pretending to be on a family trip... I realized he would do the exact same thing to me. Two nights ago, Andrew called me. He told me he was going to get sole custody of Rachel's baby so his parents wouldn't cut him off financially. He said he was going to use Rachel's baby to prove he was a 'good family man' to his firm. I couldn't be a part of it anymore."

She reached into her purse and produced a flash drive. "I have recorded phone calls of Andrew detailing this plan, as well as bank statements showing he has been hiding marital assets in an offshore account to prepare for the divorce."

The courtroom erupted.

Andrew grabbed his attorney’s arm, whispering frantically, his eyes wild with panic. Richard Monroe buried his face in his hands.

Judge Harris stared at the flash drive, then looked at Andrew with deep disgust. The golf games, the family connections, the prestigious Monroe name—none of it could save them now.
