Chapter 3 — "The Flash Drive Contained One Video... And Michael's Daughters Were In It."

Michael didn't breathe until the black SUV disappeared into the sea of brake lights.
Only then did he realize his hand was clenched so tightly around the tiny flash drive that the metal edges had dug into his palm.
"Daddy?"
Emma ran to him first.
"Who was that man?"
Michael forced a smile.
"I don't know."
It wasn't entirely true.
He knew one thing.
Andrew Collins wasn't simply Rachel's brother.
And Rachel had been terrified enough to secretly hand a complete stranger the only thing she seemed willing to risk her life to protect.
"Dad?"
Lily pointed toward the sidewalk.
"The lady dropped something."
Michael looked down.
A small silver hearing aid lay in the snow.
He picked it up carefully.
Rachel was deaf.
She didn't rely on hearing aids to understand speech.
But many deaf people wore them because they could still detect vibrations or certain sounds.
If she had dropped it intentionally...
It might be another clue.
He slipped it into his coat pocket beside the flash drive.
"We're going home," he said quietly.
"But Christmas shopping—" Emma began.
"We'll finish another day."
The girls exchanged worried glances.
They had learned something after losing their mother.
When their father canceled Christmas plans...
Something was seriously wrong.
An hour later...
Michael locked the front door of their brownstone in Brooklyn.
Snow continued falling outside.
Inside, the house smelled of cinnamon candles and the cookies Sophie had baked with their grandmother the night before.
Normally it felt warm.
Safe.
Tonight...
It didn't.
"Dad," Sophie asked softly.
"Was that lady crying because nobody understood her?"
Michael knelt beside his daughters.
"Yes."
Emma frowned.
"That's sad."
Lily looked down.
"If Uncle David had been there..."
"...he would've understood."
Michael smiled sadly.
"He would have."
The girls disappeared upstairs to change into pajamas.
Michael waited until he heard bedroom doors close.
Only then did he walk into his small home office.
He closed the blinds.
Locked the door.
Inserted the flash drive into his laptop.
For several seconds...
Nothing happened.
Then one folder appeared.
Its name was painfully simple.
IF SOMETHING HAPPENS TO ME
Michael's heartbeat doubled.
Inside were dozens of files.
Videos.
Photographs.
Financial records.
Scanned passports.
Court documents.
Bank transfers.
Hidden-camera recordings.
Everything was organized by date.
Almost obsessively.
Rachel hadn't collected random evidence.
She had built a case.
The first video began automatically.
Rachel appeared on the screen.
Her hair was shorter.
Her face wasn't bruised.
She looked directly into the camera and signed slowly.
If you're watching this...
I'm either missing...
...or Andrew found me.
Michael swallowed.
She continued.
My name is Rachel Carter.
Andrew Collins is not my brother.
Michael froze.
Not her brother?
Rachel signed carefully.
He worked for my father.
When my parents died...
he forged documents...
stole my inheritance...
and declared me mentally incompetent.
Michael stared in disbelief.
Rachel continued signing.
I'm not sick.
I'm not confused.
I'm a prisoner.
She opened a notebook.
Inside were photographs.
Luxury houses.
Private jets.
Politicians.
Judges.
Business executives.
Andrew wasn't acting alone.
He belonged to something much larger.
Then Rachel signed words that made Michael's blood run cold.
If Andrew loses control of my family's trust...
more than twenty powerful people go to prison.
Michael leaned closer.
This wasn't about money.
It was about corruption.
Millions...
Possibly billions...
Hidden through stolen identities.
Then Rachel looked directly into the camera.
Her expression changed.
Fear.
Real fear.
There is one judge I still trust.
She held up a photograph.
An older man in a navy judicial robe.
Judge Benjamin Rivers.
Michael stopped breathing.
Rivers.
His father.
His own father.
The same father who had died eight years earlier.
"No..."
he whispered.
Rachel continued signing.
Judge Rivers promised to protect me.
Three days before he could testify...
he died in what police called a car accident.
Michael felt the room spinning.
His father's accident.
The brakes had failed.
Authorities had called it tragic.
Unavoidable.
He had never questioned it.
Until now.
Suddenly...
The computer screen went black.
Every light in the office shut off.
The entire house lost power.
Silence.
Then—
A loud knock echoed through the front door.
Three slow knocks.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Michael's heart pounded.
The girls were upstairs.
Another knock.
This time louder.
"Daddy?"
Sophie's frightened voice came from the staircase.
"The lights went out..."
Before Michael could answer...
His phone vibrated.
Unknown Number.
One new message.
Only seven words.
Delete the drive if you love them.
Attached beneath the text...
Was a photograph.
Taken less than five minutes earlier.
Emma...
Lily...
and Sophie...
Standing in the upstairs bedroom window.
Someone had been outside...
Watching his daughters.
May you like
The entire time.
