Chapter 4 — "The Man Outside Knew Their Names Before Michael Opened the Door."

Michael's hands began to shake.
Not from fear.
From fury.
Someone had been watching his daughters.
Not yesterday.
Not last week.
Tonight.
The phone screen remained lit.
The message glowed like a threat carved into stone.
Delete the drive if you love them.
Below it...
The photo.
Emma stood at the bedroom window holding the stuffed polar bear she had won at last year's Christmas fair.
Lily was adjusting the curtains.
Sophie was waving at someone outside.
The picture had been taken only minutes earlier.
Someone had been standing in the snow...
Looking directly into their home.
"Daddy?"
Sophie's frightened voice echoed again.
"It's really dark."
Michael slipped the flash drive into the hidden pocket of his wallet.
Then he locked the laptop inside his desk drawer.
Whatever happened...
That evidence could never disappear.
He climbed the stairs two at a time.
The girls were waiting together exactly as he had taught them years ago.
No screaming.
No running.
Stay together.
Emma noticed his face immediately.
"Something's wrong."
Michael knelt before them.
"I need you three to listen very carefully."
All three nodded.
"If anyone knocks..."
"Don't answer."
"If anyone calls your names..."
"Don't go near the windows."
Lily frowned.
"But how would they know our names?"
Michael didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Or maybe...
He was beginning to.
The power was still out.
Outside...
Snow continued falling.
The front porch light remained dark.
Then—
Three more knocks.
Slow.
Heavy.
Boom.
Boom.
Boom.
Michael quietly walked downstairs.
Instead of opening the front door...
He looked through the narrow side window.
Nothing.
The porch was empty.
His heartbeat slowed.
Until...
Movement.
A shadow stepped from behind one of the porch columns.
The same charcoal overcoat.
Andrew.
He smiled directly toward the window.
He knew Michael was watching.
Then he slowly raised one gloved hand.
Not waving.
Pointing.
Toward the upstairs bedroom.
Toward the girls.
Michael's jaw tightened.
He unlocked the front door...
But kept the security chain attached.
"What do you want?"
Andrew's smile never changed.
"I came to warn you."
Michael almost laughed.
"You threatened my children."
"I protected them."
"You expect me to believe that?"
Andrew sighed.
"You watched Rachel's videos."
It wasn't a question.
It was a fact.
Michael said nothing.
Andrew leaned closer.
"Did she tell you about your father?"
Michael's pulse quickened.
"What do you know about Judge Benjamin Rivers?"
Andrew's expression changed.
Not guilt.
Respect.
"He was the only honest judge who ever stood against them."
"Them?"
Andrew looked over his shoulder.
As if making sure nobody else was listening.
Then he lowered his voice.
"You think I'm the villain."
"I'm not."
"I'm just the man who survived."
Michael stared at him.
Andrew slowly removed one leather glove.
Across his wrist...
A long scar stretched nearly to his elbow.
"They punished people who refused to obey."
Michael remained silent.
Andrew continued.
"You've only seen Rachel's side."
"There are people much more dangerous than me."
A car engine suddenly roared at the end of the street.
Fast.
Too fast.
Andrew's face changed instantly.
"They found me."
Headlights exploded around the corner.
Two black SUVs.
Then a third.
They weren't slowing down.
Andrew cursed under his breath.
"Get your daughters out of this house."
"What?"
"Now!"
The SUVs screeched to a stop.
Their doors flew open.
Six men wearing black tactical jackets jumped out.
No police badges.
No company logos.
Only earpieces.
Professional.
One of them shouted—
"Target confirmed!"
Andrew pushed Michael backward.
"Close the door!"
The first gunshot shattered the porch railing.
Wood splintered across the hallway.
The triplets screamed upstairs.
Michael slammed the door shut and threw the deadbolt.
Another bullet ripped through the front window.
Glass exploded across the floor.
"DADDY!"
Emma cried from upstairs.
Michael ran toward the staircase.
Andrew was still outside.
Alone.
Facing six armed men.
Instead of running...
He reached inside his coat.
Michael expected a weapon.
Instead...
Andrew pulled out a silver badge.
He held it high.
"I'M FEDERAL!"
Everything froze.
Even the gunmen hesitated.
For exactly one second.
Then the man leading the team shouted—
"Kill him anyway!"
The gunfire erupted again.
Michael grabbed his daughters and pulled them into the hallway closet beneath the stairs.
"Nobody makes a sound," he whispered.
The girls clung to each other, trembling.
Outside...
Bullets echoed through the snowy street.
Inside...
Michael realized something horrifying.
Andrew Collins...
The man Rachel feared...
Had just risked his life...
To save Michael's children.
And Michael no longer knew...
May you like
Who the real enemy was.
