CHAPTER 4 – The Woman Who Lied for Twenty Years

The room fell silent.
The boy stared at his father.
Then he looked back at his mother.
One of them had spent twenty years lying to him.
But which one?
His father stepped inside, rain dripping from his worn coat.
"I don't have much time," he said quietly.
"They know I'm here."
His mother burst into tears.
"Please... don't listen to him!"
The boy's heart pounded.
"You made me visit a grave every birthday."
"You told me Dad died a hero."
"You watched me cry."
His mother's voice cracked.
"I did it to save you."
His father laughed bitterly.
"No."
"You did it to save yourself."
The words hit like a gunshot.
The boy looked between them, unable to breathe.
"What is he talking about?"
His father slowly reached into his pocket and placed a sealed envelope on the kitchen table.
"I promised myself I would never show you this."
"But you deserve the truth."
Inside were dozens of photographs.
His mother's face.
The same black SUVs.
The same suited men from the parking lot.
Only the dates were shocking.
Every photo had been taken over the last twenty years.
She hadn't been hiding from them.
She had been meeting them.
Secretly.
Again and again.
The boy's hands trembled.
"No..."
His mother collapsed into a chair.
"It's not what it looks like."
His father shook his head.
"They paid her."
"They threatened her."
"And eventually..."
"They owned her."
Tears streamed down her face.
"I had no choice!"
"They said they'd kill you."
"They said they'd kill him."
"I thought if I obeyed... you'd both survive."
The boy wanted to believe her.
Then his father opened one final photograph.
It showed a smiling family dinner.
His mother.
The suited men.
And a little boy...
Only five years old.
The boy froze.
He recognized the child immediately.
It was him.
His mother hadn't hidden him from those men.
She had introduced him to them.
Before anyone could explain...
Every light in the house suddenly went out.
Darkness swallowed the room.
A red laser beam appeared on the living room wall.
Then another.
Then five more.
Someone outside whispered through a loudspeaker...
"We're done waiting."
The first gunshot shattered every window in the house.
May you like
And the family realized the secret wasn't over.
It had only just become a death sentence.
