Chapter 9 - The Hostile TakeoverTwo weeks after my meeting at the Pierre Hotel, the global maritime industry experienced a seismic shift that made the fall of Romano Global Shipping look like a minor tremor.

It didn't happen with a public trial or a televised raid.

It happened in total silence.

At 9:00 AM on a Tuesday morning, every single shell corporation, offshore holding account, and front company belonging to Viktor Sterling’s European syndicate simultaneously locked up.

Not a single cargo ship could dock in Rotterdam, Hamburg, Singapore, or New York.

Every automated customs clearance system—systems that had been secretly routed through Duca Strategic Intelligence architecture for decades—flashed a single, unchanging error code across terminal screens worldwide: ADMINISTRATIVE OWNERSHIP TRANSFER IN PROGRESS.

My phone rang while I was sitting at my desk in Midtown.

I picked it up on the first ring.

“Ms. Duca,” Viktor Sterling’s voice sounded breathless, stripped of all its usual icy composure. “What have you done? Every single port authority in Europe has frozen our assets. Our accounts in Zurich are showing a zero balance.”

“Not zero, Viktor,” I corrected him gently, spinning my pen between my fingers. “Just transferred. Under subsection 9-A of the global maritime compliance charter you signed off on through an intermediary shell company back in 2018.”

There was a long, terrified silence on the other end of the line.

“You... you orchestrated a hostile takeover of the entire syndicate,” he whispered, the realization finally dawning on him.

“You offered me thirty percent equity in an empire I already held the keys to,” I replied evenly. “I simply decided to take the remaining seventy percent as a management fee.”

“Name your terms,” Sterling said, his voice cracking with desperation. “What do you want? Money? Power? Territory?”

I looked out the window at the Manhattan skyline, watching the sunlight glint off the glass towers where men in expensive suits spent lifetimes believing they were the masters of the world.

“I don't want your territory, Viktor,” I said softly. “I just want you to remember one simple rule.”

“What rule?”

May you like

“Never hand your ring to someone else when the woman holding your empire can take it back with a single word.”

I hung up the phone before he could reply.
