Chapter 5 - The Vault of ShadowsThe storm outside had reached peak fury as three armored vehicles cut through the midnight streets toward the Financial District. The International Banking Vault was a monolithic fortress of granite and steel, standing silent amid the towering glass of Wall Street.

Inside the grand marble lobby, the air was cold and smelled of old paper and ozone. Silent alarm lights flickered red along the ceiling.

"We're too late," Vance muttered, unholstering a suppressed pistol. "The perimeter guards are already down."

"They're executing the transfer right now," Gabriel said, moving with military precision through the darkened corridor. Emily stayed close behind him, her eyes scanning every shadow.

They reached the main vault floor—a massive subterranean room anchored by a thirty-ton steel wheel door. Inside, standing before a glowing terminal screen, was a man in a tailored charcoal suit, surrounded by four heavily armed mercenaries.

The man turned. It was Victor Vance—Vance's older brother and the high-ranking executive of the global private equity firm that funded the Vanguard.

"Gabriel," Victor smiled, pulling a bio-metric drive from the console. "You're six minutes too late. The DNA sequence matched. Three billion dollars is currently routing through Zurich, Grand Cayman, and Tokyo."

"Step away from the console, Victor," Gabriel said, raising his weapon.

"Or what? You'll shoot me?" Victor laughed. "If my heart rate drops, the system assumes an unauthorized breach and locks the funds permanently. Neither of us gets the money. But more importantly... your son’s identity is now public domain. The entire underworld knows what he is worth."

Victor motioned to his men. "Kill the girl and Vance. Bring Gabriel to his knees."

Gunfire erupted inside the concrete chamber.

Gabriel tackled Emily behind a heavy marble pillar as bullets chipped away clouds of dust and stone. Vance dived behind an armored transport cart, returning fire with lethal accuracy.

"Emily!" Gabriel shouted over the deafening roar of automatic weapons. "The override terminal is on the left wall! It needs a manual passkey and a clean bio-metric signature!"

"I don't know the passkey!" Emily screamed, ducking as a volley of glass shattered overhead.

"It’s the date you bought the hot chocolate!" Gabriel yelled back, firing three rounds over the pillar to drop an advancing gunman. "08-02! Enter it now!"

Emily didn't hesitate. She scrambled across the slick marble floor, bullets sparking off the metal cabinets around her. She reached the terminal, her hands covered in dust and sweat.

Her fingers flew across the glass keypad: 0 - 8 - 0 - 2.

The screen flashed red: SECONDARY WITNESS IDENTIFICATION REQUIRED. PLACE HAND ON SCANNER.

Emily slammed her palm against the glowing blue glass.
